  • Mass Timber Market Updates - Nov 2021 - Week Fourtyseven

In this week's episode, Ryerson University wants to build the first 100 per cent, digitally-enabled building in the world, only to tear it down in the years to come. British designer Thomas Heatherwick's studio is collaborating with architecture office Veretec to create a campus for global pharmaceutical company UCB in southeast England. In an EU scheme inspired by clever forest-dwelling giants, Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre will construct a 500-sq-m demonstration building made of novel wood-based materials and components to showcase the benefits of timber in rural and urban development. Designed by Dutch architects UNStudio, the building will have wood thermal insulation materials, structural insulation panels (SIPs) and wood-plastic composites, among other components. With efforts to find new ways to lock up carbon, developers, architects and net zero committed companies are asking, "Is wood the new concrete?" New technology in what’s called "mass timber" production offers a carbon-cutting alternative to concrete and steel in the building sector.

  • Mass Timber Market Updates - Oct 2021 - Week Fourtytwo

In this week's episode, we welcome the launch of the International Association for Mass Timber Construction LinkedIn Page! Upon the launch of the new site Paul Kremer said "It is with great pleasure that the founding committee (to be announced soon) bring to you the very first global association focused exclusively on mass timber construction. In the coming weeks we shall provide a series of overview "marketing bites" to inform you about how the association will work, and importantly what value it brings to you, and why you should be involved. The association is 'inclusive' and does not detract from the great work being conducted by other associations in countries where mass timber is established - you understand your local markets well and do an excellent job. We offer an open invitation to state-based associations to become part of our global association, let's see how we can work together. More on this at a later time." It's never too early to get your registration signed-up for the International Mass Timber Conference an in-person event in #Portland #Oregon #USA in April 2022! • Mass Timber Construction Podcast Special Guest - Lucas Epp - Integrated Supply Chain

StructureCraft are a dedicated, skilled, and leading-edge group of in-house structural engineers, modellers, detailers, estimators, project managers, supervisors and carpenters. The team hails from a variety of countries beyond Canada including United States, Italy, Norway, Scotland, India, Mexico, France, Holland, Australia, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, and Germany.  Their passion is creating beautiful, signature structures in the most efficient way possible.

In this special guest episode, I speak with Lucas Epp about the innovative ways StructureCraft are transforming the process of design, manufacture and construction through software to achieve the holy grail of true digital fabrication - they call it Branch [not yet released].

Lucas is a structural engineer with more than 15 years of experience working in Canada, the UK, and New Zealand. After graduating from UBC, he spent several years working for StructureCraft, where he was responsible for modelling several large-scale timber projects including the 2010 Olympic Speed Skating Oval roof structure. Following a desire to explore abroad, he moved to London, UK for 5 years to work for Buro Happold. While there, he worked with some of the world's leading architects designing a range of projects including London's Olympic Stadium and a 300m (1000ft) tower in Kuwait. He then moved to New Zealand, working there on several seismically challenging projects for 2 years prior to returning to Canada.

His expertise with complex geometry and challenging structures has led to involvement in projects where the close interaction of architecture and structure is critical to the success of the project. Lucas has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer at ETH Zurich, the Architectural Association in London, and MIT, among others.

Lucas has had a lifelong exposure to timber, working at StructureCraft from a young age on the shop floor. He has since been involved in many of the company's signature projects, including the sweeping 200m (650ft) long Arena Stage Theatre facade in Washington, DC and an 80m (265ft) clear span footbridge in Banff, and now leads the engineering department at StructureCraft.
