By definition, "sacred" is a connection with God (or gods), dedicated to a religious purpose and deserving of veneration. 

That's a heavy duty definition, but I believe we can hold in the highest regard, hold sacred, the things that are important to us. By holding an idea, ideal or intention high in my heart and mind, I give it weight in my priorities. There's a reverence, love and respect I give those ideals and ideas.
