  • The Ultimate 2000s Time Capsule | The Devil Wears Prada (2006) | Mate Night Film Deep Dive

Welcome back to the booth at Mate Night, where we are reviewing films until someone finally invites us to Cannes.

Today, the stakes are personal. We’ve brought in our first-ever guest, Fes, to help us dissect the 2006 classic, The Devil Wears Prada. Is this a core childhood memory of "rags-to-riches" glamour, or a stress-inducing look at an irredeemable workplace?.

    In this episode:

    • The 8-Year Wait: Jambo finally sits down for his first-ever viewing after nearly a decade of avoidance.

    • The Machine Crunches the Numbers: We break down Meryl Streep’s "badass" performance, the "giraffe-style" 2000s fashion, and whether the dialogue still bites in 2026.

    • The Master List: Does Andy’s "glow-up" score high enough to beat out Casablanca and Superbad?.

Whether you're here for a Friday night beer or your Sunday morning coffee, grab a seat in the booth and let's see if this survives the Machine.

  • Is Ryan Gosling’s Hair Too Perfect for Sci-Fi? - Project Hail Mary (2026) | Mate Night Podcast

Welcome back to the booth at Mate Night, where we’re reviewing films until someone finally invites us to Cannes.

Today’s mission: Project Hail Mary (2026). Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Into the Spider-Verse) and shot by Greig Fraser (Dune), this film is currently smashing the box office with over $433 million and an eye-watering 8.4 on IMDb.

But does the hype match the reality? We’re feeding it into the Mate Night Machine to find the one true score.

In this episode, Fred and Jambo discuss:

    • The Gosling Factor: Is Ryan Gosling’s hair actually a distraction to scientific immersion?

    • The Humor: Does the "Olaf-style" comedic relief lower the stakes of the mission?

    • The "Long Boy" Runtime: Why the final 20 minutes might have been a "half-baked" addition.

    • The Reveal: A deep dive into that dark, non-linear plot twist that separates this from your average space adventure.

From the visual sensory experience to the 50 bad ideas Jambo came up with, we find out if this belongs at the top of the Master List or at the bottom of the bin.

Strap in, strap on, and let’s see where the Machine lands this one.

  • Is this a PRO Nazi film? — American History X | The Mate Night Film Deep Dive

Is American History X a legitimate masterpiece or just a loud, shock-heavy argument? We're back in the booth at Mate Night, still working our way through the IMDb Top 250 until someone finally sends us to Cannes.

This week, Fred and Jambo get into the 1998 cult classic. Look, we all remember the "bald rig" and the brutal cinematography, but we wanted to see if Derek Vinyard’s story actually carries weight in 2026. Fred isn't buying the ending—he calls it "hammy"—while Jambo is still leaning into the shock value and that non-linear structure. We’re talking about the thin dismantling of Nazi ideology and some honestly rushed editing before we let the Mate Night Machine handle the verdict.

Our scoring process isn't just a vibe check. We run every film through nine specific categories to find its place on our Master List. We ask if the redemption arc feels earned and if Edward Norton’s narration hits the mark. We look at the artistry of the black-and-white visuals against the choppy editing to see what sticks.

    The final number? 7.63.

That puts it in a strange spot compared to films like 12 Years a Slave or Heat. Is a 7.63 a cinematic crime, or are we just being honest about the "Godfather effect" of older cinema? It’s a polarizing result for a polarizing movie.

Tell us your gut reaction score in the comments.

  • American Beauty vs Amadeus — We Settled the Debate | The Mate Night Film Deep Dive

Welcome back to Mate Night: Road to Cannes — IMDb Top 250 Series.

We realised something: we’re moving through the IMDb Top 250 too slowly. So this week, we’ve taken the next two entries and thrown them into direct combat.

    🎬 American Beauty (1999) vs 🎼 Amadeus (1984).

Two Best Picture winners. Two towering prestige dramas. Two completely different visions of obsession, envy, beauty, and decay.

American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes, became a cultural lightning rod at the turn of the millennium — a suburban satire drenched in irony, existential crisis, and Thomas Newman’s haunting score. Once hailed as a modern masterpiece, its legacy has become… complicated.

Amadeus, directed by Miloš Forman, is a grand, operatic character study of genius and mediocrity. Lavish, theatrical, and driven by F. Murray Abraham’s iconic performance as Salieri, it explores envy as a kind of spiritual torture — all set against the transcendent music of Mozart.

    This week, we:

Break down the themes of envy, mediocrity, and artistic legacy

Debate cultural impact vs timeless craftsmanship

Rank performances (Spacey vs Abraham, Bening vs Hulce)

Analyse direction, score, dialogue, and emotional payoff

Feed both films into the Mate Night Machine

Decide where they land on the ever-growing master list

Two Oscar juggernauts. Two IMDb staples. But only one can climb higher.

Strap in, strap on, and let’s find the one true score.

  • Hamnet (2026) — Stunning Drama or Overrated Awards Bait? | Mate Night Podcast

Is Hamnet (2026) a quietly devastating masterpiece — or a beautifully shot bore? On this episode of Mate Night, we’re split.

Jambo found the film slow and emotionally distant. Harry found it tense, atmospheric, and quietly gripping. So who’s right?

We unpack the adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel and debate whether its restrained storytelling enhances the tragedy — or drains it of impact. Did the emotional beats truly land, or were we told how to feel rather than made to feel it?

We also dive into the performances — including a frank discussion about Paul Mescal. Is he bringing subtle depth to the role, or does his understated style tip into flatness?

As always, we start with our gut scores before feeding Hamnet into the world-famous Mate Night Machine to see how it ranks against its contemporaries — and the Shakespearean legacy it inevitably stands beside.

    In this episode:

🎭 Atmosphere vs Engagement — Does slow cinema equal boring?

💔 Emotional Payoff — Did the grief hit hard enough?

🎬 Paul Mescal — Subtle brilliance or limited range?

📊 The Mate Night Machine — Final rankings revealed.

  • The Rip (2026) — A Forgettable Movie with One Unforgettable Moment

Is Netflix’s The Rip (2026) a slick high-concept thriller… or a film that feels like it was stitched together by an algorithm? On this episode of Mate Night, we dive into one of Netflix’s most baffling releases of the year and ask how so much talent ended up in something so fundamentally broken.

We break down everything from the clunky, contrived plot to dialogue that genuinely feels AI-generated, along with some truly questionable creative choices — including a moment involving Matt Damon that left us asking why on earth that made the final cut. Add in what might be a career-worst miscasting for Ben Affleck, and you’ve got plenty to unpack.

As always, we give our raw gut reactions before feeding The Rip into the world-famous Mate Night Machine to see how it ranks against its contemporaries — and actual classics.
