  • Head Coach Willie Fritz: Cougars Have 'Moved On' From Win Over Utah, Focusing On Kansas State
The Houston Cougars secured a win on Homecoming with a 43-yard field goal as time expired to take down the Utah Utes 17-14 on Saturday. Quarterback Zeon Chriss was 6 of 13 for 61 yards passing with two touchdowns and 45 yards rushing. The Cougars found success in the running game, rushing for 228 yards. "You never know what your path to victory is going to be," head coach Willie Fritz said. Fritz, who joined "The Matt Thomas Show with Ross," discussed the win, which was his 250th head coaching victory, but was eager to switch the focus to the Cougars' next opponent, the No. 17 Kansas State Wildcats. "We've moved on... we got another big one coming up."

  • Head Coach Ime Udoka: Steven Adams 'Has Been Invaluable' To Rockets Young Core
The Houston Rockets have started the season 2-2 after Monday's 106-101 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Jalen Green scored 34 points, and the Rockets never trailed after losing to the Spurs 109-106 on Saturday. Head coach Ime Udoka joins "The Matt Thomas Show with Ross" to discuss the Rockets struggling with consistency early in the season. "So far after these four games, we've been up and down," Udoka said. The Rockets hope to go on a run early in the season with a softer schedule ahead, and the addition of Steven Adams will certainly strengthen the rotation. After missing the first three games of the season due to a left calf strain, Adams made his Rockets debut in Monday's win over the Spurs, recording six points and three rebounds in 14 minutes of play. "His IQ and communication have been invaluable" for the Rockets young core.

  • Cougars Men's Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson Talks TAMU Exhibition, Previews Upcoming Season
Houston Cougars men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson joins "The Matt Thomas Show with Ross" to preview a charity exhibition game against the Texas A&M Aggies. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance Hurricane Beryl Recovery Fund. The Cougars, who were ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll, have an early test against a formidable opponent ahead of their season opener against Jackson State on November 4. "In a month from now, nobody is going to remember this game, but it's part of our process," Sampson said. "It's so early in the season to be making decisions, so we're just going to let the guys play." The Cougars finished last season with a 32-5 record, earned the Big 12 Conference regular-season championship, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season and appeared in the Sweet 16 for the fifth consecutive year. Four starters and nine lettermen have returned to the lineup, one of which is guard LJ Cryer, who led the Cougars in scoring last season. "He's an outstanding shooter... I'd just like to see him be a little bit more aggressive." Sampson also comments on the emergence of NIL and the importance of the transfer portal in collegiate athletics. These elements have led many coaches to express their concerns and outright leave the game, as most recently with Sampson's friend Tony Bennett, the former Virginia basketball coach who suddenly retired earlier this month. "The reason I got into this profession to begin with, I still love," Sampson said. "I'll evolve and change because I have to."

Jalon Daniels had three passing touchdowns to help Kansas snap their five-game losing streak. "When you don't win [the turnover battle], you're going to have a tough time winning the ball game," head coach Willie Fritz said. Fritz joins "The Matt Thomas Show with Ross" ahead of the Cougars' Homecoming matchup against the Utah Utes. "They're a strong run team," and their defense "doesn't read and react... they're trying to make something happen," Fritz said.
