28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”REFLECTIONSWritten by George MihasIn verse 28, the Lord says to all who are weary and burdened to come to him, and he will give them rest. What is this rest? Some of us are exhausted in this life through problems – some of our own making and some that aren’t. But they are there, and the longer I am a Christian I am finding some situations just don’t seem to be changing. So what and where is this rest?I don’t think it can be a physical rest this side of heaven. So, I think this rest can only be achieved through drawing close to Jesus and surrendering ourselves to him. If you want to think more about drawing close to Jesus, look up Hebrews 4:14-16.In verse 29 we read, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” I understand finding rest for our souls, because Jesus died for our sins, so we don’t have to work for our salvation. And I know Jesus was humble and gentle and loved people. But the yoke is what is perplexing me. In verse 30 Jesus says, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” If I knew nothing of the trials Jesus’ disciples went through … if I knew nothing of church history and how many of our brothers and sisters have been slain for their faith … then I could easily skim over this verse and pretend the Christian walk is easy. But it can cost you in many ways in this life. Was not the yoke that Jesus himself bore the cross on which he died? But I understand this Scripture to mean that Jesus doesn’t place a big burden on us to be saved. We need to learn to follow him and obey him, but it’s not like dragging a heavy yoke through a field. Serving him is good for us – it’s what we were made for. This passage encourages me that it’s normal to feel tired and burdened in this life. Jesus knows we will feel that way. But I believe the words of Jesus – he says to come, and he will give us rest. The question is are we doing that? Are we taking His yoke upon ourselves? Are we living for Jesus Christ and his cross?May we finish the race and fight the good fight. Lord Jesus, please help our unbelief.QUESTIONDoes obeying Jesus sound like it will be tiring and horrible, or refreshing and good for us?ABOUT THE AUTHORGeorge is a member of our Bossley Park Morning congregation.
