1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? We see people wearing face masks, scanning QR codes and signs everywhere encouraging people to use hand sanitiser. These rules are important right now, especially for those who are more susceptible to illnesses.However, in today’s passage we see that the Pharisees had invented extra rules of outward cleansing that stopped people from obeying God’s word. They ask Jesus why his disciples don’t wash their hands before they eat. This culminates in Jesus saying in v.17-18, “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.” So these Pharisees have put extra rules in place so they can be ‘clean’ or ‘good’ before God – but they are only making themselves look clean.
