19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.REFLECTIONSWritten by Annie Davies"You cannot serve God and money"This verse may seem obvious: you can't be on both teams. Yet in our wealthy nation with comfortable standards of living, it is easy for us to slip into serving money like everyone else around us. We work and gain money so we can have the things and experiences that other people have. Nice shoes, a car, overseas holidays (although not at the moment). Not that these things are wrong, but have we slowed down to think, what are our motives for wanting these? To be liked by others? To be secure? To gain momentary happiness? As we have been reading, Jesus has been teaching us what it looks like to live for him and to be "blessed" (Matt 5:3-12). Being “blessed” doesn’t mean we look the greatest now, but it means that we trust Jesus and know that we are secure with God for eternity. When we have that eternal perspective, there is no point storing up money and material things now on earth. We know that it’s not important! Note the footnote after “eyes are healthy” in v22, which explains that the word "healthy" here implies being generous.Let’s pray that we would have God as our greatest treasure and be generous to others with what we have: with our time, our abilities and our money.ABOUT THE AUTHORAnnie and her husband Adam attend Fairfield evening church.
