Matthew 7:21-23

Listen Later

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day,‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’REFLECTIONSWritten by Nga LeMy husband and I have known each other for 20 years – that’s more than half our lifetime! There are things that we have learned about each other over time, like how I need alone time to recharge and how he needs to play team sport to stay fit. Then there are deep things that only we could know about each other because we are married. You might have a particular friend or a family member who knows you better than anyone, and who you feel secure with. It feels good to be truly known by someone, but that can only happen in the context of a personal relationship. In today's passage, Jesus has a firm word for those who claim to know him but do not have a personal relationship with him. They even performed miraculous things in his name (v 22), yet Jesus calls them "evildoers" (v 23).I'm tempted to think I'm good with God because of all the things I do that look impressive on the outside. Surely God must be happy that I hardly miss church or growth group, that I teach scripture and cook for people when they are unwell, or that I donate to Christian organisations. But doing the will of God the Father (v 21) isn’t about impressing others, as Jesus told us in chapter 6. It’s not even just about doing good works. It’s about being pure in heart (Matthew 5:8), and having a life that is shaped by love for God above everything else in the world (Matthew 22:37). This passage exposes my self-righteous heart – a heart that wants the good things associated with Jesus' name, to be seen as good and moral by people, but is reluctant to let God truly transform me.I need to be constantly reminded that it is only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus that I am saved (Ephesians 2:8) – and what a precious gift that is! As an adopted child of God on this side of heaven, my life should reflect a thankful, obedient heart so I can do his will. That will show that I really know Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Please pray with me that God would help deepen our relationship with Christ each day until he returns.ABOUT THE AUTHORNga attends Fairfield 10:30 congregation with her husband and two children.
