This podcast had me scared shitless that I was going to screw it up from the start. Matthew and I chew the non-binary fat on what gender fluidity really means, the mental health component of labelling gender, how we can educate ourselves on using Them/They as opposed to traditional labelling methods and just how important community is to positive change.
Matthew is the Founder/CEO of The Australian Centre for Lived Experience, a peer run centre for lived experience persons seeking alternative peer approaches (TACFLE). Matthew is a sibling caregiver to their younger brother and sister who live with enduring psychosocial diverse abilities, and has lost their mother to suicide, and consequently grandparents due to stigma. Matthew's experiences of distress and service use drive their passion for global social change in mental health, hence the founding of TACFLE.
Matthew puts education where their mouth is, internationally in certified peer specialist practice and is a visiting scholar in Psychiatry at Yale University's Program for Recovery and Community Health. Their advocacy and research reflects alternatives to biological, psychiatric and 'psy' science approaches to wellbeing. Matthew consults and advises the World Health Organisation on lived experience mental health perspective and peer work practice.
Matthew and I talk all things non-binary, international activism, global markets (Economic & Social) and the Mental Health System. Matthew shares with us a unique journey, one where trauma has helped so many others through socially engineering a deeply passionate community. I truly hope this podcast helps others become comfortable with what may have previously seemed a socially uncomfortable topic!
