Matt's Movie Lodgecast

Everybody's talking about Digger! But apparently no one is seeing it! The movie is set to lose $250 million! 64-year-old Thomas Cruise Mapother IV might not be the box office gold that he once was.

But box office bomb aside, this movie is one to contend with. It's directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who has brought us Amores Perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), Biutiful (2010), Birdman (2014), The Revenant (2015), and Bardo (2022). After discussing Inarritu's career, we take on Tom Cruise as aging oil magnate Digger Rockwell.

The outstanding Digger cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Huller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Love it or hate it! Drill baby drill! This is Digger!

From writer/director Casper Kelly, who created the Adult Swim classic short "Too Many Cooks", comes his theatrical debut in the new film Buddy. The film follows children trapped inside a surreal 1990s Barney & Friends-style children's television show who must find a way to escape their malevolent unicorn television host.

This surreal comedy horror movie stars Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, Clint Howard, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, and Keegan-Michael Key as the voice of Buddy. Listen to our hawt take about this twisted anthropomorphic orange unicorn!

We heard rumblings about this Hong Kong action film called The Furious. Xie Miao plays a hard-charging dad who is fighting a criminal empire to rescue his kidnapped daughter. The film is all bloody, non-stop action and stunts, and is recommended to those who like that sort of thing.

The cast also features Joe Taslim, Yang Enyou, Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga, Yayan Ruhian, and Jeeja Yanin. It is directed by Kenji Tanigaki. Check it out and listen to our hawt take!

At age 79, Steven Spielberg has made yet another alien film called Disclosure Day. In this movie, a television meteorologist (Emily Blunt) and a cybersecurity analyst (Josh O'Connor) go on a mission to disclose the existence of extraterrestrial life to the world. As if anyone would believe or care about it at this point! We were pretty harsh on this one.

The movie also stars Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. David Koepp wrote it. Janusz Kaminski shot it. And, at age 94, John Williams does the music!

From the visionary director Simon McQuoid, who brought you Mortal Kombat (2021), comes Mortal Kombat II (2026)! More of the same from the Mortal Kombat film series. But this time we get a whole lot more Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.

The film also stars Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Max Huang, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, and Tati Gabrielle.

Mortal Kombat II may possibly be followed up by Mortal Kombat III!

The Invite (2026) is the third Olivia Wilde movie we have covered after Booksmart (2019) and Don't Worry Darling (2022). With The Invite, she directs a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones. She also stars, along with Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Set in a huge San Francisco apartment, married couple Rogen & Wilde invite over their raucous upstairs neighbors, Cruz & Norton, for dinner.

One of the most talked-about movies of the year is the horror movie Backrooms, directed by 21-year-old Kane Parsons! Parsons made the jump from YouTube with his web series to his directorial debut on the big screen, which has grossed over $350 million.

It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture store owner who finds an endless dimension in the basement of his store. His therapist, played by Renate Reinsve, follows him in, and they get trapped in the liminal spaces. The film also features Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.

Back in 2018, we covered writer/director Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You in Episode 18 of the Lodgecast. In 2026, Boots Riley has returned to the big screen with his wild new crime comedy I Love Boosters. The movie follows a group of professional shoplifters who are targeting a fashion mogul.

The film stars Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, Eiza Gonzalez, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore. It's a chaotic capitalist critique that left us with much to discuss!

Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch) is a hairdresser in small-town Kansas who chooses Jon Hamm as her "celebrity sex pass". After her fiance sleeps with Jennifer Aniston, Gail heads to LA with her friends to find Jon Hamm.

The movie stars Zoey Deutch, John Slattery, Ken Marino, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Jon Hamm, along with plenty of fun celebrity cameos.
