Mattuschka's Right Peg

We thought Schalke was bad, and then we went to Munich. On the other hand, the Women have found a way to win some games (and another since recording!)

While the league seasons got underway since our last episode, one of the biggest events in the Union Berlin calendar, the Mitgliederversammlung (or AGM in English) also took place. Unfortunately that's left us with yet more stadium delays, and another, to use that great Denglish word, shitstorm, from the Supervisory Board elections. Das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt.

Marie-Louise Eta's 1. FC Union Berlin side ended the season in style with the biggest home win since 2020 against an Augsburg side that were chasing Europe. We look back on this and the season as a whole for the men and the women, as history was often made on and off the park.

Marie-Louise Eta made history as her 1. FC Union Berlin side picked up a late point at home to Köln before a stunning 3-1 win away to Urs Fischer's Mainz side thus becoming the first women to coach a side to victory in the men's top 5 European leagues. The women also secured the Klassenerhalt with a huge 1-0 win away to HSV, ensuring that both sides will be playing top flight football in the final season at the Alte Försterei before it's redeveloped.

While it wasn't quite the fairytale outcome for Marie-Louise Eta and 1. FC Union Berlin against Wolfsburg and the construct, at least in the former there was some positive signs for the men's side. The women returned from international duty with a superb fight against UWCL semi-finalists Bayern, falling to a 3-2 defeat after a late goal. We chat these games, and a conversation on the state of the Bundesliga generally.

The men's game against the Mainz (10.5 @ 19:30 Berlin time) is on Amazon Prime (PPV) in the UK and free on the Bundesliga App in Ireland.

1. FC Union Berlin shattered the glass ceiling at 23:55 on Saturday evening announcing that u19's coach Marie-Louise Eta was to take charge of the men's side until the end of the season. Though as we discuss, the glass ceiling may have only existed outside the club as it won't be Loui's first time in charge of the side when she walks out to a roar of "FUßBALLGOTTIN" come 15:30 this Saturday. We discuss this managerial change, the fall of Steffen Baumgart and a crazy game as the women secured the Klassenerhalt with a 3-3 draw away to Wolfsburg.

The Women's game against Bayern (22.4 @ 18:00 Berlin time) is available in many territories (including UK, IRE, US, CAN) for free via DAZN (UK link). Search for the Frauen-Bundesliga and it will pop up.

The men's game against the Construct (24.4 @ 20:30 Berlin time) is a Friday game so is free on the BBC in the UK and YouTube/Bundesliga app in Ireland.

The men and the women of 1. FC Union Berlin both picked up big (and perhaps unexpected) wins in the last fortnight with the Luckypunch of the men in Freiburg followed by the 4-1 hammering of Werder Bremen for the women. We talk about those games, as well as the defeat in Munich before in the spirit of podcast (and group) co-founder Cherrie we spend 10 minutes talking about Laufleistung.

You wouldn't think we'd finally won a game in 2026 on the basis of this episode, but the tremendous result against Leverkusen for 1. FC Union Berlin was followed up by two stinkers against Mönchengladbach and Bremen. Those results have not just brought us back down to earth, but leave us staring at a relegation battle we thought we'd left behind at Christmas.

There hasn't been much to shout about on the pitch for the men of 1. FC Union Berlin, so we instead shout about the clear issues with our recent performances. We talk about the worst misses we've seen as we deem Ilic's miss against HSV not to be as bad as Iwelumo, Rosenthal, and Hoffmann.

We also look at the last few games for the Women, as it was announced that head coach Ailien Poese will move back to working with the academy at the end of this season.

PSA: The women's game against Köln on 20.2 is free to watch in the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada among others via DAZN.
