On a recent trip to Iran, Maryam Refahi learned the power of simple human kindness. Whether we realize it or not, the things we do, both big and small, can change the course of someone's day. As Maryam says, "Our actions can make a huge difference in someone's life." It's important to remember that some day we might be the one who needs the helping hand.

Manuel Caneri is a familiar face around the Burlingame Library. He's been working here for 21 years, but you might also know him from some of his performances in various stage productions around the Bay Area. He's a big film fan, but he's an even bigger fan of Dolly Parton. Manuel tells the story of how she became an important part of his life and of how he eventually got to meet her.

At 12 years old, Gamze Akildez is the youngest person to participate in this project so far. For years and years, she'd wanted to have a younger sibling. When her parents announced that they were expecting a child, she jumped for joy. Unfortunately, the emotional highs of welcoming a new sister into the family were met with the dark lows of a complicated delivery.

For Rachel Richanbach, traditional schooling wasn't the best fit. As things got worse for her, she decided that she needed to do something else. At age 15, she enrolled in the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. After spending 6 months developing her skills in a French restaurant, she returned to the US and started her baking career. She opened her own custom cake bakery, Rachel's Cakes, in 2013.

Jerry Murphy has lived in Burlingame for over 60 years

and can regularly be seen walking near and far in his bright neon orange

vest. A former IT specialist, he had to stop working when a hereditary

disease left him completely blind. He is now a bit of a historian with a

deep knowledge of classical music.
