The more hours someone works each week in a stressful job, the more their risk of depression rises, a study in new doctors finds. Working 90 or more hours a week was associated with changes in depression symptom scores three times larger than the change in depression symptoms among those working 40 to 45 hours a week.

What’s more, a higher percentage of those who worked a large number of hours had scores high enough to qualify for a diagnosis of moderate to severe depression -- serious enough to warrant treatment – compared with those working fewer hours.

For around 40 years, scientists all over the world have been unsuccessfully trying to find a cure for HIV, but now a team of researchers from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital have apparently found an important element in the equation.

Today, people with HIV are offered so-called antiretroviral therapy, which suppresses the amount of virus in the blood and partially restores the immune system.

However, if the standard treatment is discontinued, the amount of virus in the blood rises within weeks to the same level as before the standard treatment was initiated – regardless of whether the patient is 10 or 20 years into the course of treatment.

Because menthol produces a cooling effect that lessens the harshness of smoke, tobacco makers have been adding it to cigarettes for decades. It makes smoking more accessible, increasing the likelihood that young people who don't smoke may start smoking regularly and develop a nicotine addiction. An FDA ban on menthol would have a widespread public health impact as menthol use is much more common among adult smokers who are younger, from racial/ethnic minoritized groups, and with mental health problems.

To estimate trends in menthol use among adults who smoke cigarettes by sociodemographic, mental health, and substance use variables, the researchers analyzed nationally representative annual, data from 128,327 individuals ages 18 and older residing in the U.S. from the 2008-2019 and 2020 from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Depression was assessed using the DSM-IV criteria for a major depressive episode.

It’s estimated that upward of 70% of women experience hot flashes sometime during the menopause transition. Although it has long been accepted that hot flashes can affect mental health and quality of life, accumulating research suggests a link between them and cardiovascular disease risk in women.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, with the risk accelerating in midlife during the menopause transition. Large epidemiologic cohort studies, as well as clinical studies using physiologic assessments of vasomotor symptoms, have produced evidence linking hot flashes and the risk of heart disease.
