Patient experience is more than a survey score. It reflects how a health system truly performs and how care feels to the people receiving it. In this episode, UCLA Health Chief Patient Experience Officer, Julia Gaviria, joins Dr. Eve Glazier to explore how UCLA Health intentionally designs, measures, and improves the patient journey across every touchpoint. From the first phone call to well beyond discharge, experience is not left to chance — it is built into the system. They discuss how personalization, empathy, operational excellence, and data-driven insight come together to create care that is both clinically outstanding and deeply human.

Living kidney donation is often misunderstood — frequently associated with crisis or heroism, rather than with thoughtful care, ethics and shared humanity. In this episode of Medically Speaking, Dr. Eve Glazier explores living kidney donation through the real experiences of those who live it from every side. She's joined by Dr. Anjay Rastogi, director of UCLA Health's CORE Kidney Program, along with Phillip Palmer, ABC7 Eyewitness News anchor and a living kidney donor, and Nanette Zumwalt, a transplant recipient who lived for years with polycystic kidney disease. Together, they discuss what it truly means to share life — how donors are protected, how recipients navigate gratitude and vulnerability, and how comprehensive programs like CORE Kidney support patients and families from early disease through transplant and beyond. Grounded in evidence and lived experience, this conversation reframes kidney donation not as a moment of heroism, but as an extraordinary intersection of science, trust and humanity.

When it comes to stroke, timing is everything. For every minute that passes without treatment, the risk of life-changing complications grows exponentially. Tune into this episode to learn everything you need to know about recognizing stroke symptoms and how to respond when you do.
Join Dr. Eve Glazier as she sits down with interventional neurologist Dr. May Nour to discuss why strokes happen, how they are treated, and why they are so time-sensitive. Dr. Nour, director of UCLA's mobile stroke unit program, shares the six letters everyone should memorize to quickly recognize critical stroke symptoms: BEFAST. Look out for sudden, acute changes in Balance, Eyes (vision), Face (droop or weakness), Arms (weakness or sensory changes), or Speech (slurred words) and recognize that it is Time to call 911. ASAP.
You will also learn about the risk factors for stroke--those you can control and those you can't. Plus, get a behind-the-scenes look at mobile stroke units, how they work, and how they are revolutionizing stroke care by bringing the "hospital" to the patient.
The reality is that one in four of us will have a stroke in our lifetime. Memorize BEFAST, share it with five people you love, and have them share it with five more. This simple acronym could one day save your life or the life of someone you love.
