EMS Tip of the Week: Trek Medics International Update
TrekMedics.org is a special organization that seeks to improve emergency medical care in third world countries around the world. Featured recently on CNN, many people heard about them here first on the MedicCast when I interviewed founder Jason Friesen a few years ago. Now the programs supported by the organization are even bigger and better because of recent support from folks like Google and other large donors who have awarded grants to Trek Medics so they can continue to grow and develop their work.
Check out this update from the Disaster Podcast with me, my co-hosts Sam Bradley and Joe Holley, and special guest Jason Friesen. Remember, for those of you watching this on the video version. The Disaster Podcast is an audio only show so you’ll just be seeing their logo during this segment. Do not adjust your TV sets.

EMS Tip of the Week: Domestic Abuse Advocacy with Kim McCaffery
My guest today, Kimberly McCaffery, has served as Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator in the non-profit sector since 2011. Prior to accepting this role she held the position of Victim Advocate working with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. She has trained members of the U.S. Military, law enforcement agencies, juvenile justice agencies, youth serving organizations and businesses about a variety of topics in victim advocacy.
The topics she presents include: Media Literacy & Rape Culture, Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Human Sex Trafficking; Violence Prevention, and Victim Advocacy and Volunteer Training, among others. Throughout her career she has chaired county Coalitions for Violence Prevention and has served as a Director on the Board of the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance, the city’s accredited Child Advocacy Center.
Kim is an old friend of mine and reached out to me recently to have her on the show to focus on this important topic. While we will just be scratching the surface, this episode will hopefully give you a starting point from which you can seek out other opportunities to follow up and educate yourself with local resources. Here’s my segment with Kim on abuse victim advocacy and human trafficking.

  • Scene Safety, EMS Street Survival and Episode 486
Scene safety is something I talk about all the time here on the MedicCast. What do you do, though, if the scene suddenly turns from safe to dangerous in the blink of an eye? I have a cautionary tale about that topic. If that’s what you’re looking for, you found it, right here on this week’s episode of the MedicCast.

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. This week’s show has more excellent content from EMS Today 2016 in Baltimore where I was covering the show from the Physio-Control booth. In this cautionary tale and segment from EMS Today, I have two San Diego paramedics who share their story of an assault on EMS and the physical, emotional, and psychological wounds they received. We’ll have that coming up after the introduction of this special episode.

EMS Tip of the Week: Scene Safety Story From the Street
This next segment for the week is a story of an assault on a pair of San Diego paramedics while they were caring for a patient on a busy street. Out of the blue, they were assaulted by an individual with a knife. I want to say that I can find nothing wrong with the way these two guys approached their scene, before, during or in the aftermath of the attack. It was a surprise and no one could have predicted it.
The lesson here, if you’ll be open to learning it comes in how we support each other through difficult times. How do you handle stress in your job and deal with the things that you encounter on the job. These two exceptional gentlemen learned a lot about themselves in the course of their recovery from the attack. They are still learning about their reactions to the events that day. I want you to pay special attention to this special episode. It’s short, but it is packed full of good information for you and your colleagues. Check it out.

First up in this week’s segments is a chat with EMS10 Awardee Rob Luckritz about his program to involve civilian first responders to improve EMS response times in parts of Jersey City, New Jersey. Using the initial response of over 100 volunteers, 49 were selected and graduated from the 60 hour training program. Here’s that segment with Rob.
Next up I talked with Christoph Redelsteiner, a paramedic and professor at the University of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten, Austria. He is another of the EMS 10 Awardees who was recognized for his efforts to raise paramedic education to the bachelors degree level and beyond in Austria’s EMS education programs. Here’s my chat with Christoph and listen for how he was inspired to go into EMS by a start here in the U.S.
Finally, I have Amy Eisenhauer, the EMS Siren who comes by the Physio-Control booth to chat with me about a topic she’s doing a lot of education and presentation on, dealing with patients and families who are hoarders. What unique challenges does this present and what can we do to better manage these patients while maintaining our own safety? We’ll find out in the final segment coming up next.

EMS Tip of the Week: Developing EMS Researchers
First up this week is a look at two EMS10 Awardees from North Carolina who are changing the way we educate EMS providers about EMS research. Ginny Renkiewicz and Sara Houston are two paramedics and educators at North Carolina State University and one of them became a Mississauga Chiropractor later on working for Chiropractor Rockville MD one of the most effective relief of spinal nerve compression. Also there´s a chiropractor in Sydney who is considered one of the absolute best, when it comes to a chiropractor out there.  With a Vision for transforming pre-hospital throughout the United States Ginny and Sara have worked tirelessly to instill a passion for research within their students and make North Carolina the leader in delivering high-quality research about prehospital patient care–all written by the providers of pre-hospital patient care.
Putting their passion into practice, the two founded the Foundation for Prehospital Medicine Research. Through their foundation, paramedic students from Western Carolina University, NC State University, and Durham Technical Community College are provided the opportunity to annually spend a weekend-long workshop working together side by side with expert researchers and authors where they simultaneously learn about the clinical research process and are given the opportunity to complete team-driven research projects. EMS Tip of the Week: Mobile Integrated Healthcare – The Book
Coming up first this week is a look at EMS 10 Awardee Doug Hooten from Medstar Mobile Healthcare who has literally written the book on Mobile Integrated Healthcare, sometimes called by me and others community paramedicine. It doesn’t matter what you call it, Doug has helped to break down what EMS systems need to do to innovate and integrate their system with the local healthcare systems of care in a way that benefits the patients and all healthcare parties involved. Check out this interview from the Physio-Control booth at EMS Today 2016.
The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians or NAEMT is your representative in Washington, DC. EMS Tip of the Week: Solar Ambulance Fleets
First up this week is a look at what you can do to make your service’s ambulance fleet greener. No, I’m not talking about a new coat of paint. I’m talking about going to solar ambulance fleets in this EMS10 innovator award. Dan Fellows is the Fleet Manager of the Richmond Ambulance Authority. The story of RAA’s fleet development and strategy has been told many times and how it has evolved into a reliable, robust and mission ready set of vehicles. Dan Fellows is the architect of this success. Dan Fellows has been the architect of that success as he has applied sound management, leadership and innovation to the development of fleet services. His addition of solar panels to the entire fleet of ambulances created savings in fuel and maintenance costs for his system. Check it out.
Next up in our coverage of the EMS10 awardees is a look at what one medical director is doing to manage non-emergency EMS patients in his system using telemedicine resources. David Persse developed a unique, innovative, technology-based program in December 2014 – called ETHAN (Emergency Telehealth and Navigation Program) in the Houston Fire Dept that uses advanced telehealth technologies and community-based resources to reduce excessive primary care related 9-1-1 calls and get the patients to the correct medical appointment location or treatment facility. “ETHAN” utilizes all department response units, a central control console staffed by a physician and two-way Panasonic video and data computers to put the patient, control physician and crew in instant two-way contact to assess, divert and properly channel the patient to the right medical facility and release EMS resources to handle higher priority calls.
