In Seattle, the nine-year-old Pearl is a spoiled, precocious, mean-spirited and nasty bully, but today her brother Henry, and her brotherâs friend Tim Diamond, are playing pirates on the ship âCapriceâ and theyâre making her walk the plank. Then something comes out of the water and takes her, and now there is no more Pearl.

So, series character Venus Diamond is being called back from Waikiki where she is recuperating from being shot in the face and the shootingâs subsequent post-traumatic stress, because Tim, who is her adopted step-brother, is being accused of murder in Pearlâs death and is going to be charged as an adult. It doesnât help that Timâs one time best friend Henry swears he saw Tim drown Pearl, and the press is coming after the whole Diamond family.

Meanwhile, as Venus puts aside her recovery to come back home and help Tim, he is becoming more and more ornery while at the same time Timâs movie star adopted mother, and Venusâ natural mother, is also being difficult. It also turns out that the child psychologist that is treating both Henry and Tim is tampering with the evidence by coaching Henry, while also gaining the confidence of Tim who is closing up more and more.

The mutantly large and aggressive jellyfish attacks continue as Rupert, the captain of the âCapriceâ, is attacked, as is a woman at a trendy diner, and top cop Detective Rocco, who is the chief investigating officer in Pearlâs death, gets a report of a boy disappearing.

Then everything goes to hell in a handbag as the ship âSpindriftâ is blown up, and little Pearlâs body washes up on shore where rats will feast on it. Pearlâs autopsy shows she was bound and tortured, and then Tim decides to run away and do his own investigation.

And evidently Tim is successful, as he ends up at the bottom of a lock, while somebody, or somebodies, keeps trying to kill Venus, and while they donât succeed, Venus is a series character after all, others die as somebody is panicking and trying to tie up loose ends and theyâre doing it in a spectacularly obtrusive manner.
