I was very glad that my three dogs were sitting with me while I read this story. Especially since my name is Serena, the same as the character. It captured my attention immediately and as I read, I found myself reacting as though it was actually happening to me. A very well written story!

Surprisingly great!

I make it a rule to NEVER read short stories, I started this one on accident. I did not realize it was a short story until it was over. It was AMAZING. I wanted more. I loved the twist it took. Please please write into a full length novel.

A thought provoking read

This short is well written with several twists and turns. It doesnât take any time to read, yet I found myself thinking back on it for days after. If you are looking for something quick, entertaining and will stay with you long after the end, I highly recommend recommend it.

Suspenseful

Well written and very suspenseful. Felt as if I was riding along with her. The end was not expected. Excellent.

The best of the series so far.

I like the way the author uses a prologue to introduce story characters. The story builds interest with complex interplay of the characters of the series alongside the story characters.

The series characters continue to develop in the background, with links to the other books in the series, (though these are explained so the story stands up on it's own merit) this gives depth to the books.

The story line is interesting and builds suspense to a gripping climax.

Storytelling at it's best and very difficult to put down.

Can't wait for the next one...

Disappointing

Disappointed as I have enjoyed the other books in this series a lot more. The relationship between Fenwick and Nightingale seems to be added on as an afterthought, whereas in the previous books in the series it's been a welcoming distraction from the gory details! And their characters seem to have suffered quite a shift in how they behave and think since the previous book.

Not much characterization of the other characters either, even good old Bob gets dropped from the storyline, and the victims' characters came across as shallow and unformed.

The narrator's portrayal of women's and children's voices verged on the ridiculous, which I hadn't noticed in his narration of other Elizabeth Corley books. I can't believe anyone speaks with such a high pitched voice or / and a posh accent.

As usual I liked the length which gives me better value for money from Audible, but in this instance would have preferred something shorter yet more interesting.

Long-winded tale

I found the story rather cliched and unbelievable - for example the Superintendent being so intimately involved with an investigation of this sort and the relationship between him, his family and the Detective Inspector incredible

The Queen of Crime In Her Prime

Would you listen to Death in Holy Orders again? Why?

I read Death in Holy Orders when first published in hardback. It was a pleasure to revisit such a powerful work in narrated form; James excels at creating a closed environment where characters are at odds with each other. The ecclesiastical background is novel and fascinating; high Anglican church rituals and modes of thought are unlike everyday life yet characters still exhibit human flaws. James is famous for the vivid way she includes the east coast landscape into her books, and rightly so.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Adam Dalgleish though it is difficult to imagine he is actually a policeman; perhaps he should have followed in his father's footsteps and become a vicar.

Novel? Novella? story?

My first issue was to decide if this is a very short novel, a very long short story, or a medium length novella. I do realize that the rules for length or even for what is considered a book dont really apply to digital publications, and that the appropriate length for a full length novel was determined mostly by marketing departments, but I guess Im old fashioned about some things. What I *am* sure of is that I would almost never spend an Audible credit on such a short work, and unless there were compelling reasons to do so, would be unlikely to pay cash for it, either.

In addition, this was one of the most well written and most confusing works of fiction Ive read in a very long time. The author uses language beautifully, can set a mood, describe action, and even create very believable dialog. But I still have no idea what either the club or their adversaries are, or what role they actually play. I could have wished that the author had taken the time and space to provide a stronger foundation, so that we knew, for example, if the Club is a rogue Federal agency, a Terrorist group, or a far less than legal commercial enterprise. Same with the Watchers. Who are they, and for whom do they work?

I found the characters to be more than a little stereotypical, too. The good ones were way too saintly, the children too angelic, (not to mention absolutely beautiful), and the villains absolutely and unrelievedly villainous. Even the few who were supposed to be good guys in disguise didnt work well, for me.

The only way I can make this book work in my mind is as an allegory, but again, Im not sure what that allegory would be about. Good and evil? Sin and redemption? Possible, I suppose, but not especially interesting, at least not to this reader.

The narration was extremely professional in every way, and the narrator uses her voice to excellent effect.

I give the narrator 4 stars and the book 3 stars.

A well-written suspense novel

This novel features memorable characters and a good plot that has some surprising twists.

This is my favorite of the author's books featuring Merritt Fury, an American entrepreneur whose strong principles often lead him into conflict (sometimes deadly) with prominent - and far less principled - people. His strong values also naturally attract him to other people who, like him, seek the best in everything they do. At the same time, his adventures lead to discussions and conflicts about diverse topics including art, philosophy, romantic love, politics and individualism. He is truly a man of action - and also a man of the mind.

The combination of worthy characters and an exciting (and thoughtful) plot made this book a page-turner. But it's more than that: it's also a book that leaves one with memorable scenes and words, and lots to think about long after finishing the reading.

There are occasional references to events that took place in the earlier Merritt Fury novels (Whisper The Guns and We Three Kings - they're also good!) but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to have read them beforehand.

Finally - the title. Run From Judgment. I like it. It's very appropriate, because the book has quite a few people who are doing just that. Evading. Running from judgment: from facing the meaning of what they are doing. And then we see Merritt Fury and a few other characters who understand their own actions, have thought about them, and are justifiably proud.

I love this series!

I've listened to the whole series (all but the only one I can't find as an audio book) and I really have enjoyed them all.

What a great writer with excellent narration - will there be more?

I can't help but feel the ending could have been different though - I won't give anything away as it really is a great listen and you can make your own mind up! You really do start to learn more about Jessica and what makes her tick and see the other side of her.

Definitely don't want this series to end!

This is well written with great, well drawn characters. So much so that I found myself rather loving it, despite becoming muddled at as to the role of various suspect male characters. The muddle unfortunately, never resolved. That sort of thing would usually see me abandoning a book and going for a refund, but with this, I still loved it. Funny that!

Excellent! Loved it!

Just the right amount of personal stuff mixed in with the detective stuff. The latter keeps you guessing and also lets you feel a bit smug when you work some things out.

An interesting stroll through drug addiction

Brent Cummings has an addiction to pain killers. and he is an emergency room doctor. Right off the bat, you can see how he might have an on going problem. One day on his way home, he stumbles across a womans body in the fog. He ends up accused of intent to distribute controlled narcotics by the police when they come to investigate and a coworker (Plucky, a cancer specialist) must come to his aid. However, when he goes to the pharmacy to fill his prescription for methadone, he sees the same woman, living and breathing. Brent spirals in and out of sanity for the rest of the book.

To date, I have enjoyed several Lorn books. So I dove into this book expecting the same twists and surprises. However, I found this book rather predictable. Now, let me be clear. I was entertained through out. Lorn is an excellent story teller even if youve guessed where the story is going. Yet I kept waiting for that little bit of something extra that would put this story up there with other Lorn books. I think, in large part, the lack of surprises is due to the very small cast in this story. Essentially, we have drug-addled Brent, his helpful coworker Plucky, and the dead (or not dead?) woman. I guess you can count Brents altered awareness as a fourth wheel to the story. So from the beginning, I guessed the story would go one of two ways and at about the half way point, it became clear to me which way it was going to go.

Due to the small cast, there were fewer female characters than we normally see in works by this author. However, he doesnt skimp in making them whole and interesting characters. Theres several female side characters and even a memory of a lady from Brents past.

I enjoyed the details that went into the tale, especially the loose references to other Lorn books that take place in and around Bays End. As usual, Lorn put in small touches that made connecting with this story easy and entertaining. For instance, describing the graffiti drawn on the bottom side of top bunk where Brent has to spend down time amusing and yet I can totally see that being there. While predictable, there was still some suspense in seeing how it all unfolded and who would still be alive at the end. It was an enjoyable tale even if it lacked the polished genius of other Lorn works.

Narration: Kevin R. Tracy did a good job with this narration. He had a certain desperate intensity for Brent that carried throughout the book and even managed to sound somewhat high or strung out at times. Also, once the creepiness factors starting coming out in the dialogue, he did a great job of getting those across to the listener.

Fog Warning

A handsome doctor decides to eff up his life by taking prescriptions drugs. His drug addled state is noticed by co-workers in the ER but no one speaks up and he quickly spirals into full blown addiction.
