Didn't hold my interest

A bit old fashioned in style, but lots of potential. Maybe I was just tired! Certainly a different milieu, and one the author seems to know.

Subtle way of introducing reader to MARCEL PROUST.

A Clever, Witty, Ingenious Mystery

Estelle Monbrun knows how to grab a reader and then hold him or her with vivid characters and a narrative that builds momentum that won't let you go until the end.

Possibly an awkward translation. Possibly an awkward book.

As a big fan of both Proust and continental crime, I dutifully stole this book from my sister. I expected some rather big things. As you can probably hear, I was disappointed.

I do have some mixed feelings in the disappointment. Montbrun (or Elyane Dezon-Jones) does some really interesting things with character description, particularly in the beginning of the book. Unfortunately, the interesting things do not extend into the plot. I found it halting, stilted, and full of cliches. This might be acceptable in a cozy, which this is not.

I mention the translation because the translation very nearly seemed a character in the book. I noticed it, and I generally don't. It may be that Martyn was faithfully reproducing the prose's own awkwardness, or it may be that the prose itself was the problem. Either way, it was awkward.

Flipping through what reviews I can find online (the book was written in 1995) it seems that when people like it, they mostly like it for its take on the politics of Proustian academics. I love Proust, but I'll confess to not being an academic. Possibly I was out of the niche as ideal audience member. Not really sure.

In any case, I wasn't terribly impressed despite the interesting aspects of the piece.

Agatha-esque quality

This is a good Agatha Christie style mystery, though I was able to correctly determine the guilty party halfway through the book (something I fail to do when reading Poirot...so this should provide for you a good gauge of the book's mystique). What is remarkable about this book, and what I think was omitted above in the reviews, is that it was written by the real life editor of The Friends of Marcel Proust and Combray society's bulletin, Elyane Dezon-Jones. Her descriptions of Proust's home make you feel like you are really there.

This is not how he intended to spend his Friday night.

If you like spy thrillers that keep you in suspense this is a great read.

The story was excellent. A spy thriller whose main character was a family man. It wasn't the normal man loses family over career story. Max made both work successfully. I also liked the fact that I had no idea what was going to happen next and it wasn't the normal Hollywood script. When I found out who the bad guy was I had to go back and read that section again because it was unexpected with the way the book was set up. Very creative, I am looking forward to Agent Max Book 2.

Captivating Story

This is a captivating and suspenseful thriller about Max, a secret agent. He goes on an adventurous mission that has some exciting twists in the storyline. This part one of the story is very well done and looking forward to reading part 2.

I love spy thrillers so I enjoyed this book. Yes, there were typos and other grammar errors but this I expect this from e-books and new authors.

I just hope there is a book to follow this one because I hated the ending and hope we find out what happens to the hero and his family.

Too many typos

I didn't like the way this book organized--in acts instead of normal chapters. I guess it was to allow for big jumps in time. I found it difficult to follow. The real problem for me was the number of typos. I didn't get more than 1/4 of the way into the book before I just had enough.

An Original Spy Thriller Done With Creativity and Care

Max is a believable and engaging. He carries you swiftly through this book because he is well developed, unique, and you care about his life. The action descriptions are vivid and you feel you are there. All five of your senses are invited to live the experience. This is a truly an original take on spy thrillers done with creativity and care. Enjoyable, tense, and a winner. It keeps you guessing and makes you turn the page. Excellent!

This was a good book but I got fed up by just over half way - it was getting predicable and I actually gave up on it and returned it. BUT it was well written and I would certainly read his next offering - especially if Jeff Harding was narrator!

Awesome book like a real life story

I like this offer style I mean it is simple and plain however in same time it's very interesting to read. There is no big of the doubt how it's going to end, however is rude like that the commentary book I mean everything was so detailed and story is in intriguing recommended for everyone. One thing I realised while reading this book is that no one should trust those popular titles because they are result of future advertising. The more books I read the more I realise that last known offers are far better than that hugely advertised on the top rate of books. In the book narrator is my favourite at first I didn't read any other narrator books because it is so clear and understandable the way he reads The part of that was because my nationality is not English

In Seattle, the nine-year-old Pearl is a spoiled, precocious, mean-spirited and nasty bully, but today her brother Henry, and her brotherâs friend Tim Diamond, are playing pirates on the ship âCapriceâ and theyâre making her walk the plank. Then something comes out of the water and takes her, and now there is no more Pearl.

So, series character Venus Diamond is being called back from Waikiki where she is recuperating from being shot in the face and the shootingâs subsequent post-traumatic stress, because Tim, who is her adopted step-brother, is being accused of murder in Pearlâs death and is going to be charged as an adult. It doesnât help that Timâs one time best friend Henry swears he saw Tim drown Pearl, and the press is coming after the whole Diamond family.

Meanwhile, as Venus puts aside her recovery to come back home and help Tim, he is becoming more and more ornery while at the same time Timâs movie star adopted mother, and Venusâ natural mother, is also being difficult. It also turns out that the child psychologist that is treating both Henry and Tim is tampering with the evidence by coaching Henry, while also gaining the confidence of Tim who is closing up more and more.

The mutantly large and aggressive jellyfish attacks continue as Rupert, the captain of the âCapriceâ, is attacked, as is a woman at a trendy diner, and top cop Detective Rocco, who is the chief investigating officer in Pearlâs death, gets a report of a boy disappearing.

Then everything goes to hell in a handbag as the ship âSpindriftâ is blown up, and little Pearlâs body washes up on shore where rats will feast on it. Pearlâs autopsy shows she was bound and tortured, and then Tim decides to run away and do his own investigation.

And evidently Tim is successful, as he ends up at the bottom of a lock, while somebody, or somebodies, keeps trying to kill Venus, and while they donât succeed, Venus is a series character after all, others die as somebody is panicking and trying to tie up loose ends and theyâre doing it in a spectacularly obtrusive manner.

Bad author, BAD editor!

I'm not basing this judgement on just one book -- I read both "Wildcrafters" and "Habitat," to be certain that I hadn't merely caught the writer in a slump, or caught her editor on vacation. Alas, apparently not -- both books had the same flaws.

The main character in this series is supposed to be a highly professional federal Fish & Wildlife law enforcement agent. The second sentence of "Habitat," however, refers to "octopuses." That's on Page One, a foreshadowing of the many slips, hiccups, and foolish errors which insult the reader throughout the book.

More substantive, for instance, is an encounter in which our badge-carrying heroine is physically assaulted -- but when the police come, they treat the incident as a he-said she-said episode, and walk away. Come ON! Not in any jurisdiction in the nation would a federal law enforcement agent of any gender or agency be treated so cavalierly. But it's needed for the plot, as are so many other ludicrous developments, so the author plopped it in and the editor passed it by.

Moody has a wild imagination, and her books could be fun, silly, James-Bond-type romps -- for example, she drags NASA into this one, an agency not likely in real life to have anything at all to do with Fish & Wildlife. However, she needs a more thorough and stern editor to address not only the sloppy errors mentioned above, but also the tendency in both of the books I read to have too many narrative threads which have to be knotted together too hastily at the end. The result is neither attractive nor satisfying.

She could be good, but her style will always be more fantastical than realistic. If you're looking for believable wildlife settings with common-sense sleuths, stick with Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series, or Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon. If you're looking for giddy and glamorous fun, Moody's Venus Diamond *might* be your girl -- someday. Here's hoping for better from this lively writer!

Wildcrafters

While the premise and setting for this mystery had promise, I was rapidly disenchanted when it became apparent that while the author might have some passing familiarity with the region, in all other aspects she seems to be at a loss.

I like accuracy in the novels I read. The protagonist is supposed to be a U.S. Fish and Wildlife agent. One would hope a person so employed would at least have a working knowledge of wildlife and weapons. Apparently the author has neither.

Some of the more glaring examples: Agent Diamond is observing some fishermen setting nets illegally from a Northwest beach. She reflects of the fact that the outgoing tide will fill the net with illegally caught salmon and mussels? Mussels? Mussels spend their lives firmly attached to rocks. Nobody nets mussels. One would hope a Fish and Wildlife agent would be aware of this minor point of marine biology.

Other annoyances to me personally are her remarkable unfamiliarity with her own and other weapons used in her story. Diamond supposedly carried a Smith & Wesson .38. S&W has not manufactured a .38 for over 40 years. What Smith does make is a .38 Special. No law enforcement officer these days would carry a .38 under any circumstances. And a Smith & Wesson is never, ever, referred to as a "Wessie". It is a "Smith", or a "S&W", but never a "Wessie".

She also refers to a .33 Winchester Magnum (no such caliber) and a "Thirty-ought magnum" (again no such caliber). Then there is the premise of a missing child where the authorities simply omit a house to house search of all the local neighbors in the trailer park? Apparently police procedure is another area Ms. Moody is unfamiliar with.

With a good technical editor this book might have had some promise.

I won't even go into the character development of the major players. It is a tribute to the author's skill that she could get anyone to give a favorable review.

An Underrated Author

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Skye's novels. The setting is interesting since I'm not from the NW section of the US.

Palestinian/Israeli love and detection

The seething tensions, hatreds, barbarisms and political pitfalls of Israeli-Palestinian relations form the shifting sands of daily life and police work in Jon Land's "Pillars Of Solomon," featuring the second pairing of Palestinian American detective Ben Kamal and Israeli police inspector Danielle Barnea.

Kamal and Barnea, who fell in love in "The Walls of Jericho" but were parted by political realities, are working separately as the book opens; Barnea investigating the murder of an old Jewish shopkeeper and Kamal looking into the disappearances of Palestinian children.

Their paths cross in prickly information sharing but the cases do not converge until Barnea digs into the shopkeeper's war-hero days and Kamal unearths a conspiracy of slavery and child-selling which dates to the early days of Palestinian refugee camps.

The story seethes with political complexities small and large. Jon Land's Ben & Danielle series is one of the best I have read in a long time: wonderfully conceived, beautifully executed, and perfectly researched. I found myself looking at maps and photos of the Mid-East to supplement my reading (something I've never done before!). His understanding of the politics of policing as well as the politics of the Israel-Palestine dynamic is amazing.

Thank you Jon for introducing me to a world I would never have otherwise known.

Well Written Book!

This was another good book in the Ben and Danielle series.The

main character in this book is Oaul Hessler.He is a concentration camp escapee who has become a New York billionaire.He has donated tremendous sums of money to Israel.He

also has some deep secrets that stretch back to the days of World Wra II.His corporation and the Hessler Institute has come

into possession of a medical discovery that can help mankind as well as Ben and Danielle's baby.

You also have the unexplained murders of several high school

students,both Palestenian and Israeli.It is left to Ben and

Danielle to unravel this mystery.

You also have the murders of three elderly Holocaust survivors.There is no explanation to these murders.

Another element in the book is the "Keepers of the Gate" a group that has been responsible for tracking down old Nazi war criminals. All of these factors added up make for a good book.

Read this book. It is very good.

Great read from a fine writer

Books by Jon Land are always sure to entertain and inform the reader. He always delivers characters you come to feel you know and draws the reader into the action as a participant rather than on outside viewer.

I liked the surprises. Hard to keep up at times. Like sequels because I can get into the characters enjoyed it.

Great Noir Piece

I don't know where to start. Great noir piece. If it weren't for the cell phones and the sports bar, I'd think I was reading a 1946 Chandler, only, BETTER. Trent has a way with language, and is a master storyteller. Love the underlying themes (I won't tell you what they are, you have to buy the book), and the terrific ending. The characters are phenomenal, so real you can feel them. Perry and Talia are people I've known. I'm certain of it. Do yourself a favor and spend a little money on this novella. I was disappointed that it wasn't longer. You need this for your library, I'm telling you! Beautiful book.

Let's Try to Dream

Perry got rolled last night during a blackout. He's looking for what he's lost, and that's more than his wallet and cell phone. He finds Talia; Talia finds him.

Reading Zelazny is like going on a drinking binge and waking in the gutter. But among the messy people in a sad, depressing world is existential philosophy cocooned in beautiful writing. Zelazny has a knack for turning phrases--not just on the page, but in your mind.

Along with despair, there is humor: "To Perry he looked like a kid who'd been picked on in school, which over time had given him the options of suicide, junkie, criminal, or law enforcement." Priceless.

In the end, there is satisfaction. And thankfully, some hope. All while the butterfly watches.

21st Century Noir

A really nice modern take on the noir genre. I especially liked the way that while in some sense very little is revealed about the characters, in another sense everything is revealed. The novella form is underappreciated, but is just right for this story--a short story would not have been enough, but in a novel there would have been a need for more back story or for a more extended conclusion.

Best not to know too much about the plot. Just read and enjoy. Looking forward to more from Trent Zelazny.

Gritty and entertaining

I guess Iâve been reading a lot of fantasy books because I kept waiting for the monster of mythos to appear, but it didnât. Instead it was all real, a gritty view into the main characters mind, and his shoes. I enjoyed how the story was paced, the interactions between each character and the reality of the behaviors. Glad I read this story, it was most definitely worth more than forty-five cents.
