Cass Blue may not be a household name but John Lawrence can write a mean pulp story! I will definitely be buying the next volume in this series. Thank goodness that having a Kindle allows me to try authors I would otherwise be afraid to gamble one.

It's so nice to be back with Patrick and Ingrid again

It's so nice to be back with Patrick and Ingrid again. I have always loved this couple, from back in their early days in Murder of Crows and onward. I highly recommend that readers who don't know their unique story go back to the beginning and read the series in order. Their story has stayed with me over the decades, impossible to forget. I miss the early books, though, when it was as much about their relationship as it was about the crime they were solving. I wish Duffy would delve into their relationship more... I do miss that.

No mystery here, very disappointing book

My status for this book is a lie, I have not read it, well not all of it, only three quarters and I reached my limit of frustration. A short format book was unfortunately not short enough. The writing style of Margaret Duffy I found, as another reviewer also suggested was challenging. The story was very difficult to follow and there was a total absence of hooks to keep your interest. This book would be a contender for a high score on the Hawking Index, for books that readers are most likely not to finish reading. The crime mystery is one in a series of featuring the Gillard and Langley partnership where one of their colleagues is the target of a drive by shooting in London. After the first chapter it becomes increasingly difficult to follow and understand who is who and where you are. It may be me and my expectations are set to high, but I don't think so.

Bad narration

The narration is so bad, sounds like someone doing an over the top ham actor. Spoils a good story

Mixed feelings but good overall

Firstly this is a good story with some intriguing moments and twists. However I did find it rather slow going at the start. Once it got going it was actually much more enjoyable and the story does crack along nicely.

The female narrator was excellent and gave a nicely balanced performance. Sadly I found the male narrator very distracting. For my tastes he totally overacted, almost shouting lines which did not need shouting, and I'm afraid it rather wrecked that part of the story. Sorry fella but that performance wasn't my cup of tea.

Overall a good crime story with a very good narrator for the main part.

Boring

A long winded boring story with broken thread, not worth purchasing. If you want a book to send you to sleep this is it

A psychological thriller

I've been fortunate enough to have read Jon's upcoming novel, which is similar in genre, what I would class as a psychological thriller. In the Liar The Leper Kurt doesn't want what is happening to him to be true, and he pleads for a second chance to make things right. It's that knife edge of wanting the best for Kurt, but also knowing that Kurt is reaping what he has sewn that keeps the story moving at a rapid pace. Kurt's wife plays a short role, but brings in an extra dimension to the writing. I thouroughly enjoyed this short intense read. It's one of those types of stories that keeps you thinking, long after turning the last page.

Definitely Enjoyed It!!

I enjoyed reading this short story. I felt like in a short span of time, I was able to understand the characters and the extent of what was truly going on. I didn't expect the twist that came midway through the story, it kept me engaged til the end. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Jon's creative writing style will draw you into his world of Kurt Khoury from the first page to the last. The characters and plot are well developed for a short story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this talented young man.

This book had me engaged and intrigued from the first paragraph to the last page. A must read from a new author!

This is an excellent short story. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up, but at .99 it was worth the gamble. I will say that it was a dollar well spent. From the very beginning the author pulls you in, and does a good job at teasing you with just enough information to keep you reading. I truly wanted to know what happened next the whole time, especially toward the end.

Also, this is not a spoiler alert, but some of the choices the main character is faced with will have you on the edge of your feet. And the end was satisfying. When all is said and done, it was very well done and I enjoyed it a lot.

I love this mystery audiobook. And it has definelty never before been listened by me. This was very creative. And the way it was described almost felt like I was in Kurt's shoes. Fun thrilling read. So get this audiobook.

I really enjoy Mike's writing, he tells a cool story and I am never board listening...I listened to this all in one day, and it was well worth my time! This is a story about Kurt and Rachel mostly...Kurt and his family go to Aruba, and Rachel, a close family friend is invited to come with...its Kurt's birthday! They see a strange light in the sky, and go in search of it, only to find a strange shiny object, a rather large one...and as they investigate it, Kurt get's sucked in, and the fun starts! I loved this...it was a fun story with a very nice HEA ending and it is well worth a listen and a credit...I recommend!!!!

I found this to be a very good book for teens and adults.Sue Sharp does a nice job narrating.Our main character,Kurt,and his friends and brother are on vacation and see an object fall from the sky.They investigate and Kurt gets sucked in.No one believes the other kids. (This was the part I had trouble with.Once you believe sometihng impossible is possible WHY do they insisit that everything else is still impossible.There was so much time spent conversing about NOT believeing one thing or another that it became annoying.) The police become involved,there is a lot of lying and disbelief by everyone involved.

Chilling and Terrifying

I picked up Heron Park thinking it was going to be a typical police procedural, but it was anything but. A sadistic killer is on the loose and a great cast of characters are brought in to hunt him down. The characters are well drawn, the plotline is strong and the book is easy to read. What's not easy to read are the scenes where the author puts you both inside the head of the killer, yet also allows you to feel the abject fear of the victims. To allow the reader to get inside the head of both, and literally experience what they are going through, is testament to the ability and skill of the author.

I won't lie. The scenes with the killer are terrifying - they're gory, they're graphic, disturbing, and chilling. There were moments I had to put the book down because I had to take a breath. The whole last half of the book moves fast and the question of "who" the killer is had me guessing the entire novel. This is a well written thriller worth the read, just don't read this before bed!

A chilling and intimate thriller with an unconventional use of trained dogs

One can never know what makes a sadistic psychopath twitch, but Ms Raggio does a chilling job of putting you in the head of a monster in love with the retching sounds of a dying woman. This psychological murder mystery casts a net so sticky and horrific, it will twist you up in nightmares. You don't know who the killer is, where he is, or who he's after next, and this not-knowing madness keeps you guessing until the end.

Brilliantly crafted though the investigative viewpoints of detective Cassie and her would-be-could-be lover / FBI agent Rick, the mounting sense of dread really becomes menacing when the killer starts targeting the female investigators.

Few books have come close to capturing such an intimate portrait of a serial killer. The trips through his unhinged mind as he acts out his perverse desires are carried out in the same spirit as Buffalo Bill tucking his junk and dancing in his woman-skin suit. Shudder.

Then there's the killer's weapon choice. Bred and trained for one goal, his savage pack of dogs inflate his advantage to macabre proportions. I will never look at a large dog in a park the same. Any horror or crime buff might tell you the short-term emotional backlash of reading such a gritty thriller is a few lost nights of tossing in sweat-drenched sheets, but the long-term effect is the payoff.

Glow moves along at a smart pace where the present is interwoven with expanding ripples from the past, and the small events of city life become haunted by the increasingly ominous shadow of a global corporation. Never once does the listener get lost or left behind as the story twists, turns and expands. Ned Beauman assumes an intelligent audience; none of the technical aspects of the story are dumbed down and the clarity of the storytelling ensures that even a lay person in the realm of recreational pharmaceuticals does not flounder through the occasional chemical conversation. Whether the story is approached as true to life fiction or an urban fantasy is entirely up the listener but it's such a small consideration that it should have no bearing on the sheer enjoyment of an excellent tale. The narration by Jamie Parker was close to perfect. No forced accents or over the top renderings, just subtle, deftly handled characters that let the story speak for itself. And the foxes... don't forget the foxes...

Half realism, half fantasy

Very engaging, quite easy to follow for a complex plot. Amusing, curious mixture of cosy urban London and brutal global dog eat dog. Wonderful narration that really brought it to life.

An excellent audio book.

Great story, brilliant narrator, amazing author. I can't recommend this book highly enough. My first Ned Beauman book , now I'm off to buy all his others.

Domestic Abuse

This book features what happens when there is domestic abuse. How it efforts those around the abuser and victim. Holland Industry is still trying to get Bea to merge her Domestic Business with their trading academy. Bea doesn't trust the manager, Benton and refuses the merge. Bea is asked to convince Benton's wife, Dilys to take her diamond wedding ring to be appraised. Bea able to get Dilys to admit that the ring is a fake and she is a scared of Benton. Max and Nicole are both involved with Benton's schemes. The book takes you on a journey through Dily's life and her family's. The ending will surprise you. I high!y recommend this book and series.

Abbot Agency series

I generally enjoy this author's books very much, especially this series. But, I was shocked at a scene in the book (spoiler alert) where a character strikes Bea, the main character, in the face several times while her son watches and does nothing. I wish the author would drop the continuing theme of her son's selfish, nasty behavior. Otherwise, I liked the story, although I did guess who the murderer was.

best book in this excellent series!

I couldn't help myself. I wanted to slowly savor the latest Abbott Agency novel from Veronica Heley, "False Diamond" -- after all, the U.S. release date for the next one,False Impression: A Bea Abbot British Murder Mystery (An Abbot Agency Mystery), won't be for two months! But I just couldn't: The novel was simply riveting from the first to the last, and I read it almost straight through. Damn!

Widowed Bea Abbott inherited the Abbott Agency, a company that places domestic help -- temporary or permanent -- with London's better families and firms. Now her self-important son Max Abbott, a member of Parliament with a selfish, ambitious wife, wants his mother to sacrifice so that he can climb the political ladder: He wants Bea to merge her firm with a larger one, Holland and Butcher, which trains domestic staff. (That firm featured in the previousFalse Report.) Holland and Butcher's managing director, the brutish Benton, tries to force Bea to give up the agency, and it's a pleasure to see Bea go toe-to-toe with the smug Benton and rescue the man's wife and daughter while she's at it -- although she herself is then accused of murder!

In addition to a fabulous mystery, "False Diamond" also serves as a reminder that love, generosity, and kindness determine one's true family, not blood. I loved Bea's motley crew: the computer genius Oliver, good-hearted if insecure Maggie, Maggie's "sort of" boyfriend Zander, the "grey mandarin" C.J. Cambridge (as Bea calls him), a new member of the team, an intrepid and courageous taxi driver named Lucas. The group manages to suss out what's going at Holland and Butcher and the dirty details of the wealthy Holland family.

I've loved all of Bea Abbott's adventures, but False Diamond is, as Bea would say, "a gem of the first water" -- the absolute best in the series.
