The book started out well with plenty of promise and the introduction of some interesting characters. Then like all other "women in danger" novels, it slipped into a predictable storytelling mode. A beautiful intelligent housewife, unable to communicate with her daughter, a lovely home, a stable comfortable marriage and life, the good looking man, an ever present best friend, and of course a stalker. This could have been really good, with some excellent insight into battered women, loneliness and depression. Perhaps not recommend for long car journeys, you may fall asleep at the wheel.

Repetitive with unnecessary detail.

What did you like best about The Watcher? What did you like least?

Interesting story. Obvious attempt to add a deeper psychological level to each character's motivation, but this comes across as padding without creating any real depth.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The writing style is the real problem, not the story itself. The book is overwritten, with each action analyzed to the point where the magic is lost. The reader is "nannied" along to the point where each character's thought process becomes an annoyance.

Struggled to get through this. It seemed as though the writer was attempting to create depth without just hinting at it (and allowing the reader some creative interpretation). Boring.

A great listen

This is the second of Charlotte Link's novels I have downloaded and it lived up to my expectations. With an underlying romantic storyline, this thriller became increasingly enthralling, the joy was that I could listen as I completed my daily tasks, making them enjoyable!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Watcher to be better than the print version?

Yes, I fine it hard to concentrate reading print versions of books. I found I was addicted to this book & wanted to know what happened next. With a paper version I wouldn't have got through this book as fast as I did. I'm currently listening to it for the second time.

I enjoyed the twists. They kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next.

Hayes does a great job of keeping you involved in the story. I enjoyed this one a lot. Had a time laying it down.

What Happens When A Cynical Private Eye meets The Woman of his Dreams

Steve Hayes has been an actor, a writer, and a man about Hollywood who met many of the stars of the golden age of movies, climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, and hobnobbed with Hemingway in pre-revolutionary Cuba. He has written dozens and dozens of books, particularly westerns. "A Woman To Die For" is Hayes' tribute to Hardboiled mysteries and, in it, you can't miss how he pays homage to Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep," particularly the character of the thumb sucking, purring daughter.

This story has the hatdboiled, cynical detective who acts more crooked than he really is, the sexy blonde siren who melts his good judgment, the sister who thinks her palms bleed from stigmatas, fiery car crashes, doublecrossing partners, motel rendezvous, bodies piling up, wild casinos, estate parties, cabins along the shores of Lake Tahoe, and all kinds of twists and perversions.

It is a lot of fun to read and Hayes peppers this modern detective story with OldFashioned attitude.

Although the plot could have been tighter and more focused, overall, it is a highly worthwhile read.

Two Book Review Fatal Option & The Handler

What other book might you compare Fatal Option to and why?

Since this is a sequel to The Handler, I will answer this question to the Handler. That book is very reminiscent of real life Jonestown or Waco or any of the other cults that use religion, intimidation and abuse to first recruit and then to keep their followers. This book continues that story but is a little more fiction then reality.

Any additional comments?

The reality of this and the previous book makes you wonder how this happens. This is a very well written, well researched book that provided both insight as well as an entertaining story. The protagonist is someone you get the feeling you're almost not supposed to like but you do anyway. He's had it rough and it shows. But in the end he is the hero. I am very happy with the purchase of both books and recommend them highly.

Saul Reichlin is a master of foreign-language thriller audio, and he's used to really scary effect in this Scandi-horror with a kick-ass heroine and an even more kick-ass hero. The villain is the most frightening yet in the series. Must-listen

Excellent book

Lars kelper is fast becoming one of my fave authors, the detailed descriptions in his book could easily of been too much but he manages to use them to enhance the tone of the novel - this was a fantastic book with lots of surprises I would highly recommend it on audible as the reader is amazing

Unputdownable!

Well, if I had been physically reading it instead of listening to it it would have been! Nearly listened the whole night through, was so exciting, and atmospheric, which is what I particularly like about Nordic Noir. This is my first Lars Kepler, who I understand is a husband and wife team, after being used to the calmer waters of Henning Mankell and the lovely Wallender. Quite different but equally as good. Would highly recommend, but please note it is the last in a series of Joona Linna books, so try and find one of the others first, annoying coming in at the end of a series :)

I enjoyed the story, it kept my interest & when I needed to rewind, when I was interrupted, the rewinds were short.

Who did it? Who were they? What really happened? What was going to happen? All great for making you read on!

It would have made a much better short story

I don't know if it was the translation, but the book seemed to try to hard to be arty, and fell flat. It would have made a much better short story.

An unfinished surrealist word-painting (3.5 stars)

Tato Simmone is a painter in Curitiba who exists on the monthly allowance he receives from his mother, an art and antiques dealer in New York. He has little interest in his mother, or in his father (who resents not receiving a similar allowance), or in the half-sister he hopes never to meet again. A year earlier, he had an ambiguous encounter with an older woman who now writes to him from Italy -- pages from her lengthy melancholic "testament" appear during the novel at regular intervals -- but the only significant friend in his life, a painter who was also his mentor, has just died.

At his mentor's funeral, Tato meets Richard Constantin, an art dealer with a shady reputation. He also meets a woman Constantin describes as a vampire. She can no longer suck the life out of Tato's mentor and seems intent on latching onto Tato as a substitute. Tato gives some of his time to the woman but never bothers to learn her name, referring to her only as "the vampire."

The novel's scattered moments of intrigue begin after the funeral, when Tato discovers that someone has broken into his home. On a later occasion, an unseen burglar in his studio punches him in the eye, yet nothing is taken. Threats he does not understand are left on his answering machine. As Tato ponders that mystery, another pops up. His mother, his father, the Italian, and Constantin all have a puzzling interest in a bust by Modigliani -- or is it a fake? And if it is a fake, why are the interested parties so interested in it? I would have been happier with this novel if it had produced more satisfactory answers to those questions. Instead, the abrupt ending leaves many questions hanging in the air. The novel is like an unfinished painting (the kind that Tato most often produces).

Tato is clearly not a happy guy. Transfixed in the composition of a painting, Tato experiences "a powerful illusion of forgetting, which, if I give in to it, I would call happiness." Tato's pompous and judgmental personality is so grating that it is difficult to work up any sympathy for him. Like his Italian friend, Tato seems intent on being miserable and prefers to wallow in self-pity rather than pursuing happiness.

Captivating

Captivating story of a rescue mission gone awry in the Andes. Dyana Mackie and her famous (but estranged) father are climbing in the Andes as a first step toward reconciliation. They find a lost hiker and are hijacked into a rescue effort.

I loved the writing. I loved the descriptions of the mountains and the harrowing climb.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book: it has a well developed plot, Samantha and Tuki are likeable characters who felt and acted in ways I could emphasize with, and I learned interesting details about the Lennape American Indian culture. Also, I appreciate the fact that the author put a lot of research in the ethnological and achaeological background of The Mystery Tomb. I'm looking forward to reading the other books of the Mystery Collection

Mystery Tomb

This is a great mystery by Eva Pohler. When you read this you can tell she spent a lot of time doing research! I loved the history we are given about the characters and the tribe. Eva gives her stories very realistic characters with very realistic emotions and actions, and this was no exception. There were a few surprises along the way. I read this book in about a 24 hour period and enjoyed following through the portion of Samantha and Rebecca's lives that were shared with us.

Left me wanting more!

This was an amazing book. There are a lot of facts in here that I never knew. It's very enthralling and I couldn't stop reading. The story line kept me intrigued and wanting more. I really hope there is a sequel to this!
