Season 2 of Meet Me at the Grizz begins with a deeply personal reflection on Scouting, summer camp, leadership, memory, and storytelling.
In this episode, Ken Clough looks back at the summer of 2005 and the handwritten journal entries that eventually became the book Our Week at Rotary Scout Reservation. What started as a personal journal written during a week at Rotary Scout Reservation evolved into a book, years of leadership in Scouting, and the Meet Me at the Grizz podcast.
Ken reflects on:
This episode explores the deeper meaning of Scouting and summer camp, including leadership, mentorship, friendship, camp traditions, personal growth, and the lasting impact of Rotary Scout Reservation on generations of Scouts and leaders.
Ken also discusses beginning work on a second edition of Our Week at Rotary Scout Reservation, explaining how time, experience, and reflection have brought new depth and perspective to the original journal.
Whether you are a lifelong Scout, former camper, Scout leader, Eagle Scout, parent, or someone who simply understands the importance of camp experiences and outdoor leadership, this episode is a thoughtful reflection on why Scouting and camp still matter today.

Twenty episodes into Meet Me at the Grizz, what have we learned about summer camp — and why it still matters today?
In this special reflection episode, Ken Clough looks back at the first twenty conversations of the podcast and explores the deeper meaning behind the stories shared by Scouters, volunteers, camp staff, and leaders connected to Rotary Scout Reservation.
Throughout the first twenty episodes, a common thread emerges. Summer camp is more than a week in the outdoors. It is a place where leadership is developed, friendships are formed, and young people discover what they are capable of becoming.
In this episode, Ken reflects on the themes that have shaped the podcast so far:
Along the way, Ken shares the story behind how Meet Me at the Grizz began — a conversation at camp about the importance of ensuring that future generations of Scouts have the opportunity to experience summer camp.
Because places like Rotary Scout Reservation don’t exist by accident. They exist because people care enough to make them possible.
Whether you are a Scout leader, camp staff member, parent, or someone who remembers the impact summer camp had on your life, this episode is a reminder that the experiences of camp stay with us long after the week is over.
The lessons remain.
The friendships remain.
And the responsibility to pass those experiences on to the next generation remains.
Meet Me at the Grizz is a podcast about Scouting, summer camp, leadership, and the traditions that shape the Rotary Scout Reservation community.
Hosted by Ken Clough — Scouter, camp volunteer, and storyteller.
Summer camp is one of the most memorable parts of the Scouting experience. For many Scouts, it’s the highlight of the year—hiking forest trails, swimming in the lake, learning new skills, and gathering around the campfire with friends.
But summer camp was never meant to be the goal of Scouting.
It’s part of something bigger.
In this episode of Meet Me at the Grizz, Ken Clough explores the deeper idea behind summer camp and the vision that Robert Baden-Powell had when he first created Scouting more than a century ago. Baden-Powell believed that young people learn best through experience—through challenges, teamwork, and exploration in what he called the “school of the outdoors.”
Today we might describe that idea as the outdoor classroom.
From leadership and teamwork to confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of the outdoors, the outdoor classroom continues to shape young people in powerful ways. And summer camp is one of the clearest expressions of that vision.
Join Ken as he reflects on how Scout camp brings this outdoor classroom to life and why the experiences Scouts have at camp continue to matter just as much today as they did when Scouting first began.
Meet Me at the Grizz is a podcast about the people, places, traditions, and experiences that make Scout camp such an important part of the Scouting journey.
Hosted by Ken Clough — Scouter, camp volunteer, and storyteller.
Provisional camping gives Scouts the opportunity to attend summer camp even when their troop’s schedule doesn’t align. Whether it’s a second week at camp, attending STEM Week, or simply wanting more time at Rotary Scout Reservation, provisional camping ensures that camp isn’t limited by scheduling.
But provisional camping is about more than placement.
In this episode of Meet Me at the Grizz, Ken Clough explores the leadership required to integrate provisional Scouts into a troop community. From the first campsite conversation between parent and leader, to intentional check-ins during meals, to youth leadership awareness, this episode reflects on how fellowship becomes visible at camp.
What does Scout fellowship really mean when traditions differ? How do troops make room without losing identity? And how does provisional camping prepare Scouts for belonging beyond camp?
Provisional camping always works — but leadership makes the difference.
Join us at Rotary Scout Reservation as we explore fellowship, community, and leadership in action.
What is summer camp really about?
We talk about the schedule, the merit badges, and what the week looks like. But at Rotary Scout Reservation, summer camp is about something deeper; it’s where the values of Scouting become real.
In this episode of Meet Me at the Grizz: Scouting at RSR, I reflect on some of my most meaningful moments at Rotary Scout Reservation, moments that made me smile and reminded me why camp matters.
From volunteering at Beaver Day and watching scouts take pride in preparing their camp…
To an unforgettable Order of the Arrow weekend under a sky filled with fireflies…
To seeing nervous scouts step onto the parade field for color guard and walk off more confident than before…
These aren’t just memories.
They are examples of how Scouting teaches service, stewardship, courage, leadership, and community, not through lectures, but through lived experience.
If you care about Scout summer camp, youth leadership development, or the enduring values of Scouting at Rotary Scout Reservation, this episode is for you.
🎙️ Listen now and reflect on the moments that shaped you.
Summer camp changes more than individual Scouts—it changes entire troops.
In this episode of Meet Me at the Grizz, Ken Clough reflects on a recent visit to a Scout troop where nearly every Scout had a summer camp story to share. From merit badges and program areas to friendships, traditions, and moments of growth, the conversation revealed how deeply summer camp shapes a troop’s sense of community.
Ken explores why troops that attend Scout summer camp year after year often become more engaged, confident, and connected, and how leaders, parents, and committee members play a critical role in making those experiences possible. The episode also speaks directly to new Scout leaders and units that may not yet understand the full value of summer camp, offering encouragement, perspective, and practical insight.
While this podcast focuses on Rotary Scout Reservation, the lessons in this episode apply to any troop, any camp, and any Scouting community committed to helping Scouts grow.
If you’re a Scout leader, parent, committee member, or volunteer wondering how summer camp can strengthen your unit, this episode is for you.
