Sustainability and working with reducing CO2 emissions is not only positive for the planet, it’s also a huge business opportunity. In this episode, Stefan Widing, President and CEO of Sandvik Group, explains how sustainability and business go hand-in-hand and why it was a given for Sandvik to sign up for the Science Based Targets initiative.

We invited Carina Silberg, head of governance and sustainability at pension provider Alecta, and Mats W Lundberg, head of sustainability at Sandvik to discuss sustainable business and how companies can make a real difference. Climate action was in focus since Sandvik has committed to net-zero emissions and science-based targets.

The impression of the mining sector as traditional and male-dominated might deter women from joining the industry. Nothing could be more wrong according to Marie-Soleil Lacoursiere who has worked with mining customers at Sandvik for many years. She loves her job and recommends more women to pursue a career in mining.

An internship paved the way to an employment. Meet Elvin Berndtsson, process engineer at Sandvik, who also studies to become a mechanical engineer.

Brian Huff has built his entire career around electrification. He started out 27 years ago and has since then worked on electric solutions for cars, boats, and now mining vehicles. “Electrification in mining is by far the best business case that we have seen so far and it has a real impact on the industry,” he says.

Electrification is one of the biggest technology shifts in mining, along with digitalization and automation. “Today it’s a small part of our business, but in a couple of years electric equipment will be part of pretty much every contract,” says Henrik Ager, President of Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions.

Evan Larrick works with developing electric battery mining equipment in California, a job he got after participating in the Sandvik Global Graduate program. The job fits well with his passion for sustainability.

Johan Wallin tells the story of how Sandvik became the first company to 3D-print super duplex stainless steel at an industrial scale and how that can affect different industries.
