這個字源自於19th當時對傳染病防治的遏制機制，主要是對付天花(smallpox)。美國歷史上有一位著名的女子，人們暱稱他為傷寒瑪麗 (Typhoid Mary)，她是愛爾蘭人獨自移居美國，1900年代在美國當廚師，但她卻不知道她是傷寒的無症狀帶原者，造成53人感染傷寒、3人死亡，當時衛生當局就曾對她進行疫調。其後歷史上出現重大傳染病時，這個詞就會更多被提到，像是1980年代愛滋病hiv病毒出現時，更是 **contact tracing **出現頻率最多的時候，當時因為美國揭露傳染者身份而遭到許多反彈，反而造成隱匿，導致疫調的失敗。
