An OK night on Wall St. Most of the market held onto yesterday’s gains but big tech drifted away. Not yet back to its best. Morgan Stanley and Bank of America both followed peers in beating profit estimates. BofA results were good yet the share price fell. Trump’s pick for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent (a hedge fund manager) made some comments on Fed independence (he is pro, unlike Trump), the US deficit and that sanctions on Russian oil should be even tougher (inflationary). Retail sales slowed but indicated there’s no problem with the health of the US consumer (the major contributor to the economy remember). Bond yields fell for the second day, providing some reinforcement to the recent peak.

A quiet start to today’s trading follows a quiet night for global markets with the US shut. European stocks managed modest gains despite bond yields in the UK spiking on debt level concerns. Interestingly the FTSE index has held its uptrend since covid, unperturbed by bond yields taking a similar path (they usually have an inverse correlation).

The ASX has opened down 0.45%, worse than futures were predicting as the inflation rally fizzles out. A quiet night in the US, it is closed tonight to commemorate Jimmy Carter. S&P 500 up 0.16% and the Nasdaq unchanged. Good news is yesterday’s sell-off didn’t extend. ADP private payrolls conflicted somewhat (showed growth in private payrolls slowed sharply) with weekly jobless numbers and JOLTs job openings (see Pre-market). We’ll get a better indication of the overall state of the labour market after Friday night’s non-farm payrolls. Fed meeting minutes didn’t reveal anything new.

Nasdaq down 1.9%. All it took was two economic releases overnight and the market has gone glass half-empty. Back to worrying about sticky inflation, strong labour market and fewer rate cuts in 2025.
The ASX is up 31 points or 0.4% at midday. The market has shrugged off a rise in monthly headline inflation, focusing instead on the drop in core annual trimmed mean.

A good night on Wall Street. Big tech lead the market with the Nasdaq up 1.24%, more than twice the performance of the broader S&P 500. Big chips were the top performers thanks to Microsoft’s (+1.1%) weekend news about spending US$80bn on data centres this year to further facilitate the AI revolution and Foxconn beating quarterly earnings estimates.
