Mentor Mindset

This week I had the pleasure of catching up with Elaine Harrigan who is currently the head teacher at Girvan Academy. Her inspirational work ethic and positive outlook shone through as we discussed her experiences when a school pupil herself as well as her current lockdown activities.

We talked about access to career advice and endless opportunities that young people now have with the amazing support of the school. We both agree “There are lots of different routes. There’s no one route that’s the right way, it’s whatever is right for you in your life at that time.”

Kieran is a professional dancer who has travelled the world with Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company.

I interviewed him to learn of his journey from a Girvan Academy pupil to travelling the world with his partner. Throughout the interview his passion and energy for dance shines though. You learn how he continuously worked without needing an extra job to support him which is sometimes essential for new dancers.

One of his best pieces of advice - “Try everything because you are never going to know otherwise” is demonstrated with stories of work experience weeks and touring with dance companies.

His first idea of a career may surprise you and his journey is not what anyone would have expected. Learn who helped him along his way, how he stays positive and what he would recommend to students right now.

He is also an experienced choreographer; hosting dance workshops and teaching community classes. At the height of his career he still returns to his secondary school to engage and inspire the next generation. He’s high energy, fun loving and a great friend of mine.
