  • Formula To Choose A Career In Law

The legal or law profession in India has witnessed numerous changes over the years. Lawyers are no longer confined only to the courtrooms. Lawyers and law graduates today work in a variety of settings, including corporations, IT firms, administrative services, print and electronic media, public sector undertakings, private enterprises, legislature, executive, judiciary, law firms, and corporate houses. The list is endless. But how to make a career choice in law. The law as a career offers several options and there are only two ways to look at it – one is through the (a) lens of commercials i.e. remuneration. If your driving factor is money - the level of earnings is very important. And there is nothing wrong with choosing money as your priority BUT then you have to prepare yourself for private practice in lucrative areas, joining a good, big and busy law firm or aiming to become a General Counsel with some large corporation. The second lens is the (b) choice or prioritisation of the nature of work. To some people, accomplishment comes with the passion for doing the work they always wanted to do regardless of high earnings or not. For instance, if you want to join the judiciary, there isn’t much money but certainly stature, you want to become human rights lawyer or an academician - money is less but perhaps satisfaction is more. It is a personal choice. There are some lucky ones who love doing work which is highly rewarding commercially. That number is small. It is a very subjective discussion. But my final advise to all law students and young law graduates would be to introspect – take a short break connect with your inner self and identify as to what are your long-term goals, what kind of life, activity and work excites you and will give you a sense of accomplishment. Then work only building small blocks in that direction. It is your life – Hence, it has to be your decision - a thought through considered decision – don’t rushup.

  • Original Thought Leadership

Many years back, one Judge of the Indian Supreme Court for whom I have had immense respect and who also became the Chief Justice of India, narrated an incident to me in one of our personal and exclusive conversations. I used to meet him regularly over the weekends in my early days in the profession to get the lessons on practical learning and knowledge. He shared an episode where he was sitting on a bench of the Supreme Court with two other Judges, and he was the junior most amongst them, so he was not the presiding judge that day. In the course of the hearing, he made certain oral remarks, which were his original observations. The presiding judge at that time made a supplementary remark on those observations whereby he believed and revealed that the observations made by that junior judge colleague were actually sourced from a judgement of Lord Dennings or in other words those observations were not an original thought of the judge. It would have been embarrassing, I assume. The judge who I was in conversation with gave me a very beautiful lesson, he said that it is more than likely that two different people or more can think alike at different points in time in history and life, without having known each other or each other’s work. That Judge had not even read Lord Denning’s that judgement from which he was said to have quoted or borrowed. The moral of the lesson I got that day which I am sharing, with you all is that you all are great thinkers, pen down your thoughts. People may undermine you and even accuse you of plagiarism, copying and so on (this is a gift of the west where sadly they have commercialized intellectual wealth). But if these are your original thoughts and work, own them and stand by them, defend them.

  • Comparison Is Inevitable, Do It Right

How to be successful in one day? I want to be successful. Tips to be successful.
Always Think Like a Bronze Medalist, Not Silver says Derek Sivers, an American writer and programmer. A former entrepreneur and musician, he is best known for starting CD Baby. In one of his books, which he wrote in 2020, he noted - Imagine the Olympics, where you have the three winners of a race standing on the podium: the gold, the silver, and the bronze. Imagine what it’s like to be the silver medalist. If you'd been just one second faster, you could have won the gold! Damn! So close! Damn damn damn! Full of envy, you’d keep comparing yourself to the gold winner. Now imagine what it’s like to be the bronze medalist. If you'd been just one second slower, you wouldn’t have won anything! Awesome! You'd be thrilled that you’re officially an Olympic medalist and get to stand on the winner’s podium. Comparing up versus comparing down: Your happiness depends on where you’re focusing. The metaphor is easy to understand, but hard to remember irregular life. If you catch yourself burning with envy or resentment, think like the bronze medalist, not the silver. Change your focus. Instead of comparing up to the next-higher situation, compare down to the next-lower one. For example, if you aim to buy “the best” thing, you may feel like gold when you get it, but when the new “best” thing comes out next year, you’ll feel that silver envy. Instead, if you aim to buy the “good enough” thing, it will keep you in the bronze mindset. Since you’re not comparing to the best, you’ll feel no need to keep up. I’ve met a lot of famous musicians. The miserable ones were upset that they weren’t more famous because they’d bitterly compare themselves to the superstars. The happiest ones were thrilled to be able to make a living making music. On the other hand, when you’re being ambitious, trying to be the best at a specific skill, it’s good to be dissatisfied, like that silver medalist focusing on the gold. You can use that drive to practice and improve. But most of the time, you need to be more grateful for what you’ve got, for how much worse it could have been, and how nice it is to have anything at all. Ambition versus gratitude. Comparing up versus comparing down.
