2 Samuel 8:1-18

As the story of redemptive history continues to unfold, today we begin to see how Yahweh is sovereignly blending the ingredients of his purposes to further develop and establish his kingdom.  God used the human instrument of King David to bring his covenant promises to fruition through victory and gifts and order.  So also for those of us who are in Christ, we see how God took on human flesh to provide an even more comprehensive victory for us over sin, and by his Spirit grants us gifts and abilities to be dedicated to service in the church.

2 Samuel 7:18-29

As in King David’s life, so also in ours, the triumph of God’s grace is that his name is magnified. As we consider the “already” of how Adonai Yahweh’s covenantal grace has brought us thus far in our lives, so we also look forward with hope to the “not yet” of how his grace will lead us home. In view of his covenant inclination to bless his people, we may approach his throne of grace with courageous and prayerful humility and hope.

2 Samuel 7:1-17

We see today how Yahweh is building, intensifying, clarifying and expanding on his covenant promises as redemptive history unfolds.  He connects King David to the long line of covenant blessings promised to Abraham, Moses and Caleb before him.  Beyond that, Yahweh expands his promise to include building from the seed of his servant David, a royal dynasty (Hebr. שושלת, shoshelet) that will culminate in King Jesus.  As we today stand on this side of the fulfillment of that promise in Christ, may we be confident in the steadfast love of the Lord, and determine to live our lives according to his purposes.

2 Samuel 6:1-23

Today’s text communicates a sense of reverent awe as we enter into the presence of our holy God.  As the ark of the covenant embodied Yahweh’s presence in the midst of his people, he still calls us in reverent fear to lay our presumption aside and submit to his rule and presence in our lives.  Yet in addition to reverent fear and awe, he also graciously bends to bless us as his covenant children and invites us into humble, joyful worship.

2 Samuel 5:1-25

Yahweh’s covenant with his people extends through generations from the Adam up to the present day.  Although it may appear slow-moving at times, his purposes are being accomplished and covenantal progress is relentless and certain.  Fruit of this covenant progress includes unity among his people, as we acknowledge the imago dei in each one and intentionally move toward each other in repentance and forgiveness.  As during the time of King David, God still goes before his people and calls us to follow in the direction he is moving, until that final covenant consummation in the new heavens and the new earth.
