April 08, 2025Using Mathematical Induction to find the Limit of a Recursive Sequence

In this video I go over an example of a sequence that is defined by a recurrence relationship, and then use mathematical induction to prove it is increasing, bounded, thus convergent, and finally its actual limit. The first term of the sequence is 2, and the next terms are governed by the recurrence relation 1/2 (previous term + 6). Calculating these out manually suggests the terms are approaching the number 6. This suggests we use Mathematical induction by assuming the that terms are increasing and thus proving they are when starting with the initial term. I prove the sequence is bounded and increasing, hence the monotonic sequence theorem states it is convergent, but this doesn't tell us the value of the limit. I determine the limit using the recurrence relation in the limit as the terms go to infinity, and finally obtain the answer, which is the limit is 6. Amazing stuff!

In this video I go over the definition of increasing and decreasing sequences, which are thus denoted as Monotonic. An increasing sequence has each consecutive term bigger than the previous, while a decreasing sequence has each consecutive term bigger than the previous. I illustrate this in two examples, which we can determine by manually plugging in n and n + 1 inside the sequence and identifying which term is bigger. In the second example, I also show that we can use the derivative (via the quotient rule) to find if a sequence is increasing or decreasing. Since the derivative of the corresponding function is negative, the sequence must be decreasing!

ln this video I have uploaded another very rare 1994 interview of John Hutchison on the Elaine Smitha Show titled: The Hutchison Effect - Exciting the Electromagnetic Field Potentials: Discussing John Hutchison's work in levitation, anti-gravity propulsion, molecular changes, and free energy. This was the first interview John did with Elaine, which he followed up with 4 more in the year 2000. In this video I have uploaded the famous 1988 Hutchison Effect footage of the Clorox Javex bleach bottle literally "breathing" as it gets squished then decompresses periodically without any physical contact. This demonstration shows the vast variation in the physical phenomena that are produced from John Hutchison's array of high voltage electronic equipment he obtained from old military surplus and scrapyards.

In this video I discuss how to graph sequences manually as well as using Desmos online graphing calculator. I also go over an example on finding the values of r in r^n that are convergent and plot them out. For negative values of r, the sequence, and hence its graph, oscillates from positive and negative values during both divergence and convergence.
