The Yetzer Hara is a disease, and Torah is the only medicine. The Mesilas Yesharim declares that Elul is a time of closeness to Hashem, and the only way to achieve that closeness is through the derech of Torah. The Gemara in Kiddushin states it clearly: "Barasi Yetzer Hara, barasi Torah tavlin"—I created the Yetzer Hara, and I created Torah as its antidote. The whole world has a Yetzer Hara, but only we have the cure. Chochma might exist among the nations, but Torah doesn't. They can have good middos, but they'll never truly defeat the Yetzer Hara without it.
The 20th century saw the rise of countless isms—socialism, communism, Zionism—all promising utopian societies without the Torah. What happened? Mass destruction, people swallowing each other alive, ideologies that collapsed into blood and suffering. Even those with good intentions realized only on their deathbeds that they were wrong. But by then it's too late. The Yetzer Hara used to be in the streets; now it's in your pocket, 24/7. Are you equipped to fight it? Will you take the medicine Hashem prescribed, or will you keep trying remedies that don't work?
