Messages from The Grove

In a continuation of The Common Thread series, we enter one of the largest sections of the Bible, the Prophets. Pastor Andrew sets the tone for us as we move forward and explore some of these books not only as they relate to Christian history and the history of Israel but also understanding the concept of prophet and prophecy and the relevance to our relationship to Christ today.

John Driver continues the Common Thread series by exploring the Song of Songs, a book of poetry that deals with physical attraction, intimacy, and love… topics we often remove from whatever we consider to be “spiritual”, thus overlooking God’s gift of human joys.

The book of Lamentations opens up for us how we can respond to God when we just don’t how this relationship with God works. The process ironically leads us to a longing for a richer fuller relationship with Him.

Andrew Wharton continues the Common Thread series and asks the question: how do we respond to the chaos in the world today? The book of Esther offers an insightful glimpse at what our responses should be when we encounter uncertainty, injustice, and problematic situations that seemingly have no solutions. Esther's story teaches us so much about how to react according to God's ways rather than our own.

John Driver continues the Common Thread series with an exploration of the book of Ecclesiastes and its invitation to sit in the seeming meaninglessness of life, or “hevel” as it is called in Hebrew, yet discover a counterintuitive and divine joy that can only come from pulling one’s head out of the sand and acknowledging what we each most want to deny: that we are not in control of life.

As we continue to learn from the lives of the children of Israel the stories of Zerubbabel, Ezra and Nehemiah point to a place of self examination often regarding our own intentions and hard work. In essence how good actions can lead us to be distant from the one whom we desire to serve and please the most.

Andrew Wharton and John Driver push pause on The Common Thread series for an honest discussion the issues of systemic racism and upheaval facing our nation, addressing the ways the Church has not been engaged in this conversation in the past and the attitude of Christ that the gospel compels us to share moving forward.

As the journey of the children of Israel is chronicled again relevant to their desire for Kings and someone to make sure that they will have hope in the future, the books of Chronicles point to the place where hope comes from.  Pastor Andrew explores this idea of the patterns we see that assure us of the hope we have today.

Taking a deep look into the book of Psalms, John Driver discusses an often lost piece to the puzzle of faith in our modern world: the practice of honest lament, which invites us to offer to God praise that is steeped in the reality of our full human experience, not one merely full of positive, yet empty confessions.   To download sermon notes or watch past messages, visit: http://grovechurchmj.com/video Facebook: http://facebook.com/grovechurchmj Instagram: http://instagram.com/grovechurchmj Twitter: http://twitter.com/grovechurchmj Visit us online at http://grovechurchmj.com
