On Palm Sunday, the writer to the Hebrews encouraged us to “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author of our faith and the one who brings it to its goal.” During the holy days between Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday, we have a clear opportunity to do just that—to fix our eyes on Jesus as he makes his way from an upper room to the halls of justice to a cross and finally from an empty tomb—all for us. In spite of the shame, Jesus endures all that to win our salvation that we may not grow weary and lose heart.

Why does Jesus keep going? He knows what is coming. He knows the opposition he will face. He knows the suffering and death he will endure. He knows how the cheers on Sunday will turn to jeers on Friday. Yet he keeps going to the cross. He disregards its shame. He endures all matter of hostility at the hands of sinners. He keeps going for us. So we watch. We worship. We fix our eyes on Jesus and do not lose heart.

During our midweek Lenten worship services, we prepare our hearts for the Feast with the help of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism as we review the basic teachings of God’s Word. In this message, we reviewed the Ministry of the Keys and Confession.

Jesus gives us a glimpse of his human nature and the anguish he felt as he considered dying for us. At the same time, we also get a glimpse of his divine resolution to glorify his heavenly Father and deliver us from eternal death at just the right time when all of human history came to the right moment. What a price he paid for us! May our love for him and his compassion grow greater every day!

March 07, 20213.7.21 - When God Suffers: God Cares for His Church Even Through Suffering (John 2:13-22)
God is passionate for holiness and righteousness. We see that zeal as Jesus clears out the temple early in his ministry. Only with his help can I love God’s law as Christ does. Only with his help can I love the cross of Christ. Because I cannot keep God’s law, Christ did the unimaginable. He took the punishment for my law-breaking on himself and has given me peace.

February 28, 20212.28.21 - When God Suffers: God Works Through Suffering for Our Eternal Good (Mark 8:31-38)
God is powerful enough to work through my sufferings in this life for my eternal good. He does not create evil, but he does work through it for his good purposes for me. For that reason, I can even praise God in the midst of hardship. Since I know that Jesus suffered immeasurably for me, I give thanks because God does not take my suffering lightly, but loves and cares for me deeply.

Some days I feel like a failure, especially when I fail God and give in to temptation. Yet God tells me I am a conqueror. He tells me that he has given me total victory. I have peace in my life because Jesus resisted a life of temptations for me and defeated Satan through his perfect love. Through Christ, I really am victorious.
