One of the arguments often used to attack the truthfulness of the Bible is the concept of ‘slavery’. Slavery was a common practice during the time of Christ and his apostles and originated as a way of paying off a dept. At the time of Paul writing his prison epistle ‘Philemon’, the gospel had already begun to transform society at all levels, including slaves. One particular slave Onesimus had run away from his owner to join Paul, join Dr Corbett as he looks at Paul’s response in his prison written epistle, Philemon.

While he was a prisoner in Caearea Philippi, Paul wrote his epistle to the Colossians. Despite his difficult circumstances, Paul’s prayer was for the Colossians to know Christ more richly, deeply and as preeminent. What would your prayer be if you had been imprisoned for two years? In 61 AD, the Apostle Paul arrived in Rome and was imprisoned to await his hearing before Caesar. It was during this occasion that he wrote to the Philippians. We have the account of how Paul first went to Philippi recorded in Acts 16. Using this as some of the background to understanding his epistle to the church there helps us to see two great things. Firstly, that the now senior apostle had mellowed and grown. Despite being in adverse circumstances he was grateful and thankful for Christ had done for him. Secondly, despite the Philippian church’s poverty and their adverse circumstances, Paul could encourage them to rejoice in it! He coveted their prayers - not for a change in his circumstances, but that Christ might be glorified as the Gospel advanced (Phil. 1:19)

Throughout the previous instalments of this series Dr Corbett has familiarised us with a young and committed Jew named Saul. Through his powerful conversion Saul transformed so much from the man he was that he became known by a new name: Paul. As we pick up in the final part of this series we find that Paul knows his life is coming to an end and is happy that he has run the race well. How is it that can he say this? In the previous 2 instalments of this series, we have been getting to know a committed Jew called Saul. He had some issues: anger, impatience and arrogance to start. But they would give way in his encounter on the road to Damascus as he began his transformation into Paul the Apostle.

Saul was a proud & religious man, yet not very Godly. The New Testament records his story and we see that he has a life changing experience when he meets Jesus. His conversion began a transformation which would last his entire life.

How did the man who set out to destroy Christianity, become its greatest Advocate? Saul was a proud & arrogant Jew who described himself as a ‘Hebrew of Hebrews’. Yet the book of Acts reveals to us that while he displayed this facade, he was desperately empty.
