A: The standard annual physical checks fasting glucose and A1C, both of which measure glucose at its easiest moment to appear normal. Neither measures insulin directly, neither captures glucose variability, and neither identifies the 15-year window before a diagnosis. A: Yes, and faster than most people expect. Fatty liver research shows measurable improvement on MRI after just three days of dietary change. A: A ratio above 2 strongly signals insulin resistance. A ratio above 3 indicates significant metabolic dysfunction that needs immediate action.

Q: Can a standard cholesterol panel detect fatty liver disease?

A: Yes. Elevated triglycerides combined with suppressed HDL are consistent with a liver struggling to process fat due to insulin resistance. You do not need an ultrasound to suspect it. The signature is already there on your standard labs.

Q: Is LDL the most important number on a cholesterol panel?

A: No. The triglyceride-to-HDL ratio is a far more reliable indicator of metabolic health. Divide your triglycerides by your HDL. Below 1 is excellent. Above 2 means insulin resistance is very likely present.
