FUN WITH NIGHTMARES
A Kafka-audio-trip in six melodramas and twelve-tone jazz.
Nine musicians, grouped into three trios, create a multi-layered, idiosyncratic soundscape.
Within it, narrator Tristan Vogt brings Franz Kafka's poetic world to life, allowing it to wander and evaporate. Far from being mere background, the music enters into a constant, ever-surprising interplay with the texts and offers numerous new perspectives on Kafka's work—including a particularly subtle humor and occasional poetic revelry.
The music was written by composer and pianist Peter Fulda in 2024 for a major project by Metropolmusik in collaboration with the Kulturforum Fürth. Two concert evenings there were recorded and will be released on CD in November 2025 (label11).
All of the music is based on an inventive 12-tone structure (the “Kafka series”) and a secret rhythmic code, but at the same time offers lots of space for the musicians' improvisational versatility.
Metropolmusik was founded in 2010 and has set itself the task of promoting the creative music of the Nuremberg metropolitan region and its protagonists. Unusual projects and concert formats are developed and cultivated, preferably across genre boundaries. To date, Metropolmusik has organized over 500 concerts, released a CD edition of outstanding projects comprising 19 albums to date, and is home to numerous outstanding musicians and composers among its approximately 100 members.
Peter Fulda's (*1968) work as a composer, arranger, and pianist with his own small and large ensembles, orchestras, choirs, and big bands has been recognized with numerous awards, including a one-year artist-in-residence scholarship in Montreal, Canada, several cultural awards, and most recently a nomination for the German Record Critics' Award.
Peter Fulda is professor of jazz composition at the HfMDK Frankfurt am Main and recipient of the Hessian University Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
To date, he has released 15 CD albums under his own name and has been involved in approximately 50 others as a sideman, arranger, composer, or producer. He regularly realizes large-scale projects, often in collaboration with Bayerischer Rundfunk.
