By Turn Yourself into a Fantasy Monster
The podcast currently has 25 episodes available.
On this episode of Throwing Heat, Tony, Dan, and Ross the Boss had the distinct privilege of interviewing legendary hall of famer, St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop, Ozzie Smith. We get to hear about the earliest baseball days in Ozzie’s path to the majors, as he shared the diamond at his high school with another hall of fame, Eddie Murray. Ozzie’s draft day, his promotion to starting shortstop in spring training by baseball legend Alvin Dark, and the origin of his flips and handsprings as he used to take the field all shine a light on the class act that is Ozzie Smith.
The Throwing Heat team is in full agreement with Ozzie about the changes in the game and what a loss it is — such as the fact that people don’t even know how to bunt anymore. We consider together if the 85 Cardinals would small ball today’s teams to death, as they try to hit home run after home run, striking out right and left and not bringing good efficiency to the game.
We also get to hear about the meaning of the all star game back in Ozzie’s day, which explains why the National League had such historic success. And, while Ozzie was kind enough to recount the biggest home run of his career in the NL championship series of 1985, we all agree that it is his slick fielding (which led to 13 Gold Gloves), flashy double plays, and team play that make Ozzie one of he all time greats.
In this episode Dan Ratner, Ross The Boss, and Kasey Shienvold will go over the Fantasy Football Basics 101. Here is what we go over:
1. What is Fantasy Football?
2. What are League Settings
3. The Draft
4. Managing The Season
Dan and Ross the Boss are joined by Miami Heat Forward and three time NBA champion, Udonis Haslem. We cover a wide range of topics, but get the inside scoop on what makes UD tick, how he came to be who he is, and all of his adaptive leadership skills that continue to build and drive the winning culture of the Miami Heat. You’ll get to hear about his experience in the bubble, including the mental component required to manage the situation well and thrive there — even dealing with the initial bad food they had to endure in the unprecedented time. Udonis and the Heat were one of the teams that thrived well and went all the way to the NBA Finals in 2020. He connected his time growing up in the tough neighborhood of Liberty City, Florida to a good amount of his tenacity, values, and mental toughness.
The interview also covers his friendship with Dwyane Wade to this day and their business together in the Miami restaurant 800 Degrees (that’s pretty damn hot!). Udonis also has multiple businesses and definitely enjoyed Ross describing him as the Magic Johnson of the East. But Udonis was none too pleased with Dan’s Cavs’ Lebron shirt. Dan turned this to his advantage, though, and may end up scoring a Udonis jersey out of it, promising to wear the right things next time.
We also discuss the latest in the NBA, hearing UD’s take on the Nets’ big three and how they compare to Lebron, Wade, and Bosh. He doesn’t get defensive, but he notes that the Heat were better at defense! We finish on hearing about his interactions with his three sons, who are athletes in three different sports, his longevity and the secret to it, and his toughest matchup in the NBA as a 6’8” undersized forward guarding 7 footers at times. It was a pleasure to have him on!
Ross and Dan interview Anthony Puccio, the head writer for The Association, and former beat writer for the Brooklyn Nets. Anthony has appeared on NBATV and CBS Sports and is in the know on all the latest happenings around the NBA.
We talk about the top four teams in each conference, as well as their chances to win it all. But, as a Brooklyn fan, Anthony reveals he is rooting not only for the Nets, but also the on the rise New York Knicks. While the Nets have already made their big move in acquiring James Harden, will the Knicks make a move for Bradley Beal? They are one of the few teams that has the assets to do it. Come find out who Anthony thinks is another main team in the running if Washington is willing to move Beal.
Some of the other storylines we hit on: The Utah Jazz are the best team in the league, but, as strange as it sounds, can they win the championship in such a superstar driven league? Does James Harden have the fire and head game to lead a team to the championship? The Phoenix Suns are one of the biggest surprises of the year, coming in third in Anthony’s rankings in the West, while the Celtics have to get a big man. The Cavs have 1 or 2 (or 3!) to give. The Clippers are slipping in the rankings according to Anthony, while Ross the Boss thinks they can still win it all. With Kawhi, anything is possible!
We look forward to more conversations with this young basketball media mind. Come check out MFSN for more insights from us and we’ll let you know when Anthony returns to any of our shows!
Dan (@drdanratner), Kasey (@kaseyshienvold), Andrew (@andrew_seifter) and Ross the Boss (@rossamark) start with 1st and 10. The crew focuses on how to assess and improve your roster entering the final stretch. Strategies and advice are offered about addressing the waiver wire and making trades with other owners. When should you overpay for someone? How do you use the depth on your bench to improve your starters? How do you assess the value of your players and players on other teams? We help you answer all of these questions. Dan and the Boss are then joined by the talented and hysterical comedian, Larry the Cable Guy. Larry loves to talk about Nebraska Cornhusker Football! Find out how Larry lost his tooth and laugh with us as Larry shares some of his funnier jokes. The man knows A LOT about Cornhusker football and has strong opinions about college athletics. You won’t want to miss his interview. Because no one can live on fantasy sports alone, we provide our healthy dose of pop culture. Dan, Kasey, Ross and Lauren begin the process of paring down the Sweet Sixteen. We have two epic matchups. The crew discusses the amazingly fortunate draw that Magneto has had as he faces off against the powerful, but entirely metallic Voltron. The second matchup is much more competitive. Zeus, the God of Thunder, faces off against the villainous Wizard, Voldemort (Oh crap!! I said his name). Can a god be defeated by an evil wizard? You’ll have to listen to find out who wins this close call. Pop culture, debates, and intelligent humor drive so much of what makes this show different from other sports shows. Chaos is the word of the day at the running back position — what else is new? — and our MFSN waiver wire show will help you make sense of it all. We break down the backfields in Indianapolis, New England, San Francisco, Baltimore, and Seattle, identifying the best pickups for both short- and long-term value. Meanwhile, it’s another good week for adding wide receivers to your roster, which should come as welcome news to all the unhappy Kenny Golladay owners out there. But should you prioritize Golladay’s teammate Marvin Jones or Corey Davis, who finally seems to be putting it all together? At tight end, it’s impossible to replace the great George Kittle, but thankfully there are more interesting tight ends available than usual, including a smart stash, a red zone threat, and Kittle’s backup in SF. It’s not the greatest week for streaming QBs, but there is one guy who struggled last week that we like to bounce back in a big way — listen in to find out who! Plus, we’ve got some great defenses to stream, our kicker picks, and last but not least, our list of highly-rostered players that you can feel comfortable kicking to the curb.
