Mike feels the attraction of mountaineering is the connection with the natural world that allows him to plug back into what he feels it is to be human. The interaction with nature in its rawest sense pushes him out of his comfort zone by heightening sensitivities and takes him into a new world with a freedom of view where he is a small aspect of the whole picture.
