I have been eagerly waiting to preach from this passage for 26 years- In the spring of 1993 I visited Westminster Theological Seminary and heard Ray Dillard give a lecture in the Prophets class on this passage. Ray Dillard died the following fall, so this was the only lecture I ever heard from him. Perhaps that is why it stuck with me-----After giving a brilliant exposition of these chapters, Ray stopped, and looked at the young men sitting before him and said- -Do you know what these words mean- -Do not despise the day of small things - of small beginnings.' Most of you will be pastors of small churches. You will be tempted - like Zerubbabel - to wonder whether all the effort is worth it- Your whole ministry could be devoted to small, struggling churches - and during your lifetime, you may never see anything more. But do not despise the day of small things - the day of small beginnings.-----Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts-----Whether planting a church in Elkhart - rehabbing a house in South Bend - whether in parenting, or in business - whatever you do - wherever you go - your confidence is not in your great ability - your wisdom, your power, your connections or wealth - but in the Spirit of our God-

-Sung Psalm- 103-----The seven letters reveal the church of Jesus Christ in all her frailty and weakness - and not just frailty and weakness - but even sin, rebellion, and death.----There are lots of ways in which the churches of Revelation 2-3 fall short- But all of those shortcomings are overturned in Revelation 21-22-----Here are a few------ There are false apostles in the church of Ephesus -2-2-. There are twelve apostles of the Lamb in the heavenly city -Rev 21-14-.--- The church of Pergamum dwells where Satan's throne is -2-13-. The heavenly church dwells before the throne of God and of the Lamb -21-1---- Some in the church of Sardis are dead -3-1-. All in the new Jerusalem are written in the Lamb's book of life -21-27-.--- Jesus may remove the lampstand from Ephesus -2-5-. God and the Lamb are the lamp of the eternal city -21-23, 22-5-.--- The church of Smyrna -and others- are filled with lies and idolatry -2-9, 14-15, 20, 3-9- Nothing unclean, detestable, or false will enter the holy city -21-27-.--- Trial and tribulation characterizes those in the seven churches who rely on God's promises. The heavenly city is characterized by the fulfillment of those promises------All of the promises to -the one who conquers- in chapters 2-3 are fulfilled quite explicitly in Revelation 21-22.----All of the letters are about hearing Jesus - but this final letter to the church in Laodicea highlights that theme.----And again, at the beginning every letter, Jesus starts by telling us about himself. If you are going to hear Jesus rightly, then you need to understand who Jesus is-

As we saw last time, Zechariah 1-7 through chapter 6 all comes under one -time stamp.- All of the -night visions- of Zechariah came on the night of February 15, 519 B.C. -the 24th day of the 11th month-.-- --The two visions of chapters 3-4 fit together - but they are too much for one sermon. Chapter 3 is on Joshua and the Forgiveness of Sins, Chapter 4 on Zerubbabel and the Gift of the Holy Spirit----These two visions come together at the Day of Pentecost when Peter declares, -repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.-
