Overview: Last week, we heard Daniel-s vision of the ram and the male goat. The ram was the Persian empire. The goat was the Macedonian empire of Alexander the Great.----Many scholars have puzzled their heads over why God would use a ram and a goat. There is really nothing in Persian or Greek literature or culture that would explain why Persia would be a ram, and Greece would be a goat.-- --But then again, the book of Daniel was not written for Persia or Greece. It was written for Jews. And honestly, if Daniel 8 wasn-t followed by Daniel 9, I don-t think anyone would have noticed this - but in Daniel 9, God makes it clear that a Day of Atonement is coming.----And if you look through the scriptures for a passage that talks about a ram and a male goat, there are only two- Leviticus 16 and Daniel 8. -There are lots of passages that talk about rams and goats generally - but only two that talks about a ram and a male goat------Except Leviticus 16 talks about two male goats. Where is the other goat-----But watch- Leviticus 16 says that Aaron shall offer the ram as a burnt offering for the people. Then he shall take one of the male goats as a sin offering, and the other one shall be -presented alive before the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness as a scapegoat.- And Daniel 9 says that at the end of the 70 weeks, atonement will be made.----Jesus is the other male goat. We saw last time that Daniel 8 ends with Daniel sick - appalled by the vision. He sees a ram and a male goat. That would make any Jew think of the Day of Atonement. But there is no atonement.----The end of chapter 9 explains the unfinished vision of chapter 8....

James 1 insists that the implanted word is able to save- God has brought us forth -by the word of truth.- We must be quick to hear.----But words must lead to action.----Nothing is more maddening than to hear someone say- -Go in peace, be warmed and filled.- -go in peace, be happy and content------James challenges us to love and good deeds - but so many of us are barely clinging to faith- It can sort of feel like he is -piling on------But consider the examples that James uses- Abraham and Rahab. We often think of Abraham as such a hero of faith -and rightly so- - but consider what God told him to do- Leave your homeland - your family and friends - and go to a land I will show you. Oh, and by the way, you will never actually possess the land yourself- You will be an alien and stranger - and it will only be 400 years from now before your descendents inherit the land.----Okay, Lord, I-m here- Now what do I do-----And Rahab- She-s a prostitute-----While Abraham may seem so exalted that we cannot achieve his goodness - Rahab reminds us that God frequently chooses the weak and foolish things of the world to shame the wise and powerful.----So it doesn-t really matter who or where you are. Whether you are somebody or nobody, God calls you all to one and the same faith.

They had to count on the sovereignty of God to sustain them generation by generation, crisis by crisis. They also had to trust the power of God to control the flow of world empires as they rose and fell.- -Walton in Davis, 107-----And while Daniel 8 is speaking of one particular king - and one particular episode in Israel-s history - the principles remain true in every age.

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 146-----James is talking about what it means to hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. And James says three things about Jesus-----First, he is Lord. We saw this in 1-1 - -a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.- Lord is the way that the LXX translated Yahweh - so James is saying that Jesus is Yahweh. ----Second, Jesus is Christ - he is the Messiah. Jesus is the anointed Son of David - he is the promised King who restores the throne of David forever.----And third, Jesus is the Lord of glory. There is a way in which -Lord of glory- sums up who Jesus is both as God and as man.----John Calvin says this well- -It was also imperative that he who was to become our Redeemer be true God and true man. --It was his task to swallow up death. Who but Life could do this- It was his task to conquer sin. Who but very Righteousness could do this- It was his task to rout the powers of world and air. Who but a power higher than world and air could do this- Now where does life or righteousness, or lordship and authority of heaven lie but with God alone- Therefore our most merciful God, when he willed that we be redeemed, made himself our Redeemer in the person of his only-begotten Son.... Since neither as God alone could he feel death, nor as man alone could he overcome it, --he coupled human nature with the divine that to atone for sin he might submit the weakness of the one to death- and that, wrestling with death by the power of his other nature, he might win victory for us.- -John Calvin, Institutes II.xii.2-3-----But what does it mean to believe in this Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory-

They may seem wild, scary, bizarre - but that is quite normal for apocalyptic literature.----Vern Poythress once said that the book of Revelation should not be read as a puzzle book - but as a picture book.----The same is true of Daniel. If you want to understand this, you will do better to watch the pictures - rather than turn it into a puzzle....

Overview: -Sung Psalm- 12-----What is faith- And, no, I-m not asking for a dictionary definition. I-m asking for a practical definition. In other words, let-s get inside faith and see it for what it is at its root.-----What is faith-----Faith is not merely intellectual assent to certain concepts about God and salvation. Even the demons -believe- in that sense-----Faith includes a certain sort of confidence - a trust - or, perhaps better, a loyalty to a person.----Believing in Jesus Christ includes a resting on him - a confidence in him - a loyalty to him.----And really, the book of James all about the nature of genuine faith. We-re going to see over and over again that James is concerned to see a faith that works by love - to use Paul-s term-----Today, we are looking particularly at verses 1-12 - and these verses are tied together by the use of the word -steadfast- in verses 3 and 12.-----Throughout his letter, James is going to talk about what genuine faith looks like. Genuine faith remains steadfast in the midst of trials - because we know where these trials are going.
