First please share about the scope of services from NAMC.

Tell me about Expanding the Team, starting with two experts?

● We recently added two experts on military technology—Retired Colonel Warren Sponsler, who brings over 26 years of Military experience, and Staff Sergeant Dr. Matthew Foglesong, a Marine Corp veteran with over 14 years of service.

What will their focus be?

● The focus of both positions will be to evaluate NAMC members’ technologies for the defense space with the hope of getting the technology fielded.

Growth and Communication those are crucial and being addressed.

● Warren Sponsler (COL-R), joins NAMC as their Senior Director of Strategic Growth and Communications. He will oversee NAMC’s strategic communications, ensuring the organization’s role as an enabler of successful acquisitions for the Government is clear and understood.

Strategies are being focused on as well?

● Staff Sergeant Dr. Matthew Foglesong joins NAMC as their Director of Technology. Foglesong’s experience in writing strategies and the employment of technologies will elevate members’ technologies in the defense space. As a previous Government customer of NAMC’s, Dr. Foglesong has seen the impact that NAMC has had on successful acquisitions firsthand.

Tell us a bit more of that history of retaining mission-focused individuals?

● NAMC has a history of retaining mission-focused individuals. Sponsler and Foglesong will join Executive Director Alissa Roath and other long-term staff members, Andy Dallas, Deputy Executive Director, founding industry partner, previous member and past President of the Board of Directors, and Ashley Snider, Business Administration Director. Foglesong Military & Work Experience • Foglesong is a Marine Corps veteran, having served 14 years as a Reconnaissance Marine, finishing his USMC career as the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, Science and Technology Division Ground Combat Element Chief and Robotics Branch Chief, and advisor to the Secretary of the Navy on autonomous systems development and integration. • Upon leaving the Marine Corps, he served as the Defense Technical Fellow at Pratt Miller Engineering, where he focused on future combat systems development and integration, leading efforts for the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV), Robotic Combat Vehicle-Light (RCV-L), and Optionally Manned Tank Virtual Prototype (OMT ViPr). Sponsler Military & Work Experience • Sponsler has 26+ years in commissioned service leading units and organizations around the world in both combat and peacetime. Sponsler has completed multiple U.S. and overseas tours with experience in Bosnia and Kuwait, in addition to three combat deployments to Iraq between 2003 and 2011. He also served as both the Senior Live Fire Trainer and Senior Brigade Combat Team Trainer at the Army’s National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. • His Army career culminated as the Deputy Director and Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army Futures Command’s Next Generation Combat Vehicle Cross Functional Team at the Detroit Arsenal in Michigan. Tony Conley welcomes Bo Garcia is Dean of the Community Education and Workforce Development Division at Lansing Community College. He manages Corporate Training, Small Business Development, Community Education, Continuing Education, and Extension Centers.

Formerly, Bo was Executive Director of the Business & Community Institute at LCC, where he was charged with creating business and workforce development initiatives between LCC and regional employers.

Bo also authored "Business Matters" a weekly business column in the Lansing State Journal for over five years, he has been published in Entrepreneur Magazine and numerous other business publications, and presents on various business issues regionally. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Northwood University, a Master of Public Administration from Western Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University. But most importantly, Bo is married to his wonderful wife Renee and loves spending time with is amazing 19 year old daughter Annie.

Tony Conley welcomes Rick Snyder, business executive, venture capitalist, attorney, accountant, and politician who served as the 48th governor of Michigan from 2011 to 2019.

Snyder previously served as the chairman of the board of Gateway from 2005 to 2007. He co-founded Ardesta, LLC, a venture capital firm, and HealthMedia, Inc., a digital health coaching company, both based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Snyder was considered a possible Republican Party candidate for Vice President of the United States in 2012, although ultimately Paul Ryan was selected. Snyder then ran for and won re-election as Governor of Michigan in 2014. Snyder was term-limited and could not seek re-election in 2018. He was succeeded by current governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Snyder has recently teamed up with his former state CIO David Behen to start a cybersecurity company.

Snyder has taken on the role of CEO at the new firm SensCy, based in Ann Arbor, Mich. Behen, who led the state’s Department of Technology, Management and Budget during Snyder’s governorship, is the chief client success officer.

The company is focused specifically on small and medium-sized organizations, offering consultation-type services including security assessments, improvement plans, policy writing, the creation of incident response plans, vulnerability scans, and other types of monitoring. It also advertises a “personalized concierge service” where a dedicated cyber professional works with individual customers.

Tony welcomes back Doctor John H.Braccio, who has been in private practice as a Fully Licensed Psychologist in Michigan since 1978. He continues an active private practice. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1971. He founded Regional Psychological Services in 1981 and continues to be the Director.

In a professional career beginning as a classroom teacher in 1966, Dr. Braccio has taught school in California and Michigan, been a public school administrator, worked as a consultant at various levels, has done innumerable inservices and training sessions, has taught many graduate and undergraduate classes at Michigan State University, has done executive coaching and consultations, and has done many thousands of hours of individual psychotherapy and psychological assessments. He lectures, does workshops and writes on such topics as AD/HD, Weight Loss, Marriage and Divorce, Addiction, Smoking Cessation, Anger Management, Test Anxiety, Learning Disabilities and Hypnosis. He has written over 400 newspaper articles, three books and developed numerous self-help tapes, CDs and DVDs.

Dr. Braccio has determined he would like to share the knowledge, wisdom and insights he has learned from working with thousands of persons since he began his career in education and psychology as a classroom room teacher in 1966. Even though he developed many self-help tape programs over a 25 year period, it was not until 2005 that he was determined to share his vast knowledge on a large scale.

Dr. Braccio talks with Dave Akerly on timely topics of the day.

For this three-segment interview, Tony and Dr. John discuss how COVID has impacted adults, children, and the elderly. Then he tries to understand what the media has done during COVID in connection with mental health, in order to communicate the story beyond physical challenges from the virus.

Their conversation focuses on how the recently wrapped up month of May is National Mental Health Month. Mental Health Month raises awareness of trauma and the impact it can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children, families, and communities.

Tony welcomes Mark Hollis, who serves as the Chief Operating Officer for Rock Ventures, tying threads among the 100+ companies in Dan Gilbert’s portfolio and delivering value to those companies located in Detroit, Cleveland, Charlotte, Phoenix, and other Family of Companies communities. Positively impacting Rocket Companies, Cleveland Cavaliers, Shinola, Bedrock, 100Thieves, StockX, Xenith, Dictionary.com and other Family of Companies are among his primary duties. Working with FOC team members, he was involved in launching and coordinating the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Detroit’s annual PGA TOUR event, the Forbes Under 30 Summit, Detroit Grand Prix transformation, and attracting other outreach events. As Chairman of the Detroit Sports Organizing Corporation, Mark is frequently working with Detroit’s professional and amateur sports teams, entertainment entities, and venues.

Hollis retired from a 38-year career in intercollegiate athletics after serving 10 years as the athletics director at Michigan State University. During his tenure at MSU, Hollis was known for his innovation in the development of creative events. The Cold War outdoor ice hockey game established world-record attendance for the sport and led to the NHL’s Winter Classic. The world-record attendance setting “The BasketBowl” men’s basketball game played at Ford Field led to today’s NCAA Final Four venue format. The Game of Change commemorated the historic game played at Jenison Fieldhouse and featured Detroit’s history with the Tuskegee Airmen. The Quicken Loans Carrier Classic played on the flight deck of the USN Carl Vinson led to future military appreciation events by college and professional sports. And the PK80, a 16-team men’s basketball event played in two Portland-based venues, delivered a unique appreciation for Phil Knight’s contributions to college sports.

Hollis received the 2015 National Football Foundation John Toner Award and the 2012 Athletic Director of the Year by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal/Daily. He served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, as chair for the 2016-17 season. Hollis was instrumental in negotiating long-term agreements for Michigan State University with WJR, Nike, and Fox Sports. During his tenure, the Spartans competed in 3 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Fours, 8 bowl games (including the Rose Bowl and College Football Playoff), and won 29 Big Ten championships and 1 National championship. MSU athletics facilities saw some of their biggest improvements with renovations and construction projects including Spartan Stadium, Breslin Center, golf facility, football building, baseball stadium, and softball stadium.

Prior to returning to Michigan State, Hollis spent two years at the University of Pittsburgh as associate athletic director. Before his stint at Pitt, Hollis worked for the Western Athletic Conference. He joined the WAC as an administrative assistant immediately after college. Two years later, he was appointed assistant commissioner. Hollis earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from Michigan State in 1985, where he served as a basketball team manager under Jud Heathcote. In 1992, he earned his MBA in business administration from the University of Colorado.

He and his wife Nancy, have a daughter, Katy, and two sons, T.R. and Michael.

James Craig was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. His father, a veteran of the United States Army, served as a reserve police officer at the time of the 1967 Detroit riot, which left a lasting impression on a young James Craig.

Craig graduated from Cass Technical High School and joined the Detroit Police Department in 1977, where he was assigned to the 10th Precinct. After being laid off in 1981 due to budget constraints, he moved to Los Angeles where he joined the LAPD.

During his tenure as a command officer of the LAPD, Craig was responsible for overseeing many of the most violent areas in Los Angeles and was able to achieve tremendous reductions in crime through the implementation of innovative strategy and by building strong community partnerships.

His experience as the president of an African American police association exposed Craig to vitriolic and extreme elements of the Democratic Party and kick-started what had already been a political awakening for the young police officer.

His transition in becoming a Republican hastened in 2009 after his appointment as Chief of Police in the City of Portland, Maine. In Portland, the police chief had the responsibility to approve concealed pistol licenses. Often urban police chiefs favor gun control, however, this experience helped him to understand that law abiding citizens with concealed weapons permits can be one of the biggest deterrents for crime.

After two years in Portland, Craig was recruited by Cincinnati officials to serve as Chief of Police for the Cincinnati Police Department. Chief Craig was the first African American and first person from outside of Cincinnati to hold the position of Chief of Police. During his tenure as Cincinnati police chief, he was responsible for leading a department of 1,500 sworn and civilian personnel.

In 2013, Chief Craig was asked by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as the 42nd Chief of Police to the City of Detroit, his hometown. Over the next eight years, Chief Craig led a department of 2,800 sworn and civilian personnel and achieved great success with propelling the Detroit Police Department into 21st century policing standards.

One critical accomplishment came in 2014, when the police department reached compliance from mandated federal consent judgments. Judgements, which were agreed to in 2003 after a Department of Justice investigation, found a pattern of excessive force, civil rights abuses, and a culture of covering up misconduct.

Confidence in the Department continued to increase among the city’s residents and business owners, in part, due to the establishment of community policing initiatives including Neighborhood Police Officers to focus on quality-of-life issues and Children in Trauma Intervention (CITI) Camp to offer police mentorship to at-risk youth.

One component for Detroit’s success in reducing levels of violent crime was the increased use of data and analysis to support proactive policing through the Detroit Police Department (DPD) Real Time Crime Center, Community CompStat, Ceasefire Detroit, and Project Green Light Detroit programs. Craig is credited with reducing response times for priority one 911 calls. He has also initiated programs to cut gang membership and authorized large-scale sweeps aimed at protecting Detroit neighborhoods most impacted by crime.

During his tenure, Craig built strong ties between the department and community leaders. He is widely recognized for his leadership during the unrest of Summer 2020, as other cities around the country experienced looting, fires, and riots.

After 8 years as Chief of Police in his hometown of Detroit and 44 years as a dedicated public servant, Craig retired in June 2021.
