Capital Area Michigan Works! and its Business Services Team are hosting the Capital Area Virtual Job Fairs to bring the plethora of opportunities and open positions to the region’s job seekers. The event is made possible by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Office of

Employment and Training.

The job fairs will run from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, and from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 21. Each day will have 30 different employers present, and no employers will be present at both events, so CAMW! staff encourage job seekers to register for both days.

Whitney Anderson-Harrell shares the inspiration and vision for the new foundation: Desk Drawer Fund. Anderson-Harrell provides more details on the Five Philanthropic Pillars of the fund: Arts & Culture, Youth Empowerment, Stable Housing, Financial Education and Fostering Entrepreneurialism. The fund has quickly become a force for positive growth in the community and has the energy to have many chant ‘Go Green!’

Whitney Anderson-Harrell serves as the Chief Community Development Officer at MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU). Anderson-Harrell began at MSUFCU in 2015, previously working for Kraft Foods for 13 years. She currently oversees the Credit Union’s community development, diversity, equity and inclusion, business development, and financial education departments as well as the Financial Innovation and Education Center. She also serves as the President of the Desk Drawer Fund, a foundation supporting the MSUFCU and Oakland University Credit Union communities.

Anderson-Harrell currently serves as the Vice Chair of Lansing Promise, is a member of the African American Credit Union Coalition's Board of Directors, Lansing Links Inc., the MSUFCU African American Employee Resource Group, Capital Area United Way, Funders, Lansing SAVE board, Lansing School District’s Magnet Programs Advisory Committee, the MLK Commission Greater Lansing, the MSU Multicultural Business Program, MSU Sales Program, the MSU Student-Athlete Engagement Faculty Committee, and the Peckham Community Partnership Foundation board.

Vicki Hamilton-Allen talks to respiratory therapist, Mike Hess, also known as the COPD Dude, from the COPD Foundation. Hess shares important information about COPD and breathing issues in general. He explains how other factors such as social and environmental determinants intersect with healthy breathing. Hess also discusses COVID-19, a known respiratory virus, and its impact on the COPD community. Take a deep breath and listen for the next 10 minutes.

Mike Hess is the Senior Director of Patient Outreach and Education at the COPD Foundation. A respiratory therapist by training, Mike has spent much of the last decade focused on advocating for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In 2018, he started the Think COPD program, a partnership between the National Institutes of Health and WMed Health in Kalamazoo aimed at bringing lung screenings and educational events to underserved communities in Southwestern Michigan. Now with the COPD Foundation, Mike leads the Oxygen360 project, an inter-professional collaboration aimed at fostering innovation in oxygen therapy technology, as well as improving access and awareness.

Vicki Hamilton-Allen talks with the incredibly talented, Lansing-based, freelance illustrator, Marissa Tawney Thaler on the Michigan Business Network. They discuss some of Marissa’s projects and her ability to advocate for social justice by designing beautiful art to convey powerful messages in children’s books.

Marissa Tawney Thaler of Lansing holds a BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design, where she studied Art Education and Illustration. After college, she worked as an elementary art teacher, using school breaks to cultivate her personal work. In the fall of 2018, Marissa left teaching to pursue a career as a freelance illustrator. Since then, she has established Briarwood Art Collective, shown her "Drawing Folded Paper" series around Michigan, and worked on several children's book projects. Marissa’s work, often narrative in nature, uses primarily drawing media to achieve a “bittersweet aesthetic.” She aims to find the lighthearted side of struggles and moments of connection in everyday happenings.

John Mashni is an attorney, professor, writer, entrepreneur, movie producer, and now children’s book author. John’s first children’s book is a re-telling of his children’s favorite bedtime story. It’s the story of Cinderella, with John’s own unique twist.

One of John’s main motivations for writing a children’s book has nothing to do with the actual book. For years he dreamed of being able to work with his children in a way that would make them proud.
