Conocemos la historia de Juana Corbalán, una esclava que en el año 1814 compró su libertad y la de su hijo liberto José Ruperto. Luego de pagar lo acordado por su hijo, Juana decidió enfrentar en la justicia a su ama para reclamar el reconocimiento de los derechos que otorgaba el decreto de “Libertad de Vientres” (1813). Conversamos con las historiadoras Magdalena Candioti (CONICET, Argentina) y Erika Edwards (University of Texas, El Paso) para comprender mejor las posibilidades y las decisiones de Juana en sus luchas por la libertad.

El 1 de agosto de 1835 Lorenzo Barcala, un coronel de origen africano, fue fusilado en la plaza principal de la ciudad de Mendoza, luego de ser declarado culpable de organizar una conspiración de la facción unitaria contra el gobierno provincial. Ese día culminó una trayectoria militar excepcional protagonizada por un hombre descendiente de esclavizados que aportó a la independencia de la actual Argentina. Después de su muerte Barcala trascendió en la historia nacional con una fuerza inusitada para un militar afrodescendiente. La explicación a ese fenómeno es compleja, pero aquí ofrecemos algunas pistas. Además, conversamos con Belén Barcala, una descendiente de séptima generación de Lorenzo Barcala, que expone por primera vez en forma pública su experiencia de autoreconocimiento como afrodescendiente, las memorias familiares del coronel, y sus interrogantes sobre la afroargentinidad.

Después de la deserción de José Peletay del Batallón n° 11 de Infantería en 1815, el creador del Ejército de los Andes, José de San Martin, diseñó un modelo de ejército que evitó desangrarse por las deserciones. En esta entrega, con los historiadores Hugo Contreras Cruces y Alejandro Rabinovich recuperamos la perspectiva de los desertores; y con la historiadora Beatriz Bragoni conocemos la estrategia del llamado “padre de la patria” para garantizar la lealtad de la tropa y referimos algunos registros memorísticos populares y oficiales de la participación de los soldados del bajo pueblo rioplatense en las guerras de la independencia argentina.

José Peletay fue un trenzador de riendas y peón, de origen indígena, “destinado” por la justicia a tomar las armas de la patria después de la Revolución de 1810 en el Río de la Plata. A partir de un sumario por deserción que se le realizó a Peletay en 1815, por orden de José de San Martin, nos introducimos en el fenómeno de las deserciones durante las guerras de independencia en el Río de la Plata y Chile. Participan en esta primera entrega los historiadores Hugo Contreras Cruces y Alejandro Rabinovich, quienes nos ayudan a entender las deserciones desde la perspectiva de los soldados.

A fines de 1804 un grupo de esclavos y esclavas que eran trasladados para ser vendidos en Lima protagonizó una sublevación a bordo de la fragata Tryal en el Pacífico Sur, entre Valparaíso y El Callao. Liderados por un esclavo llamado Mory, tomaron la nave y obligaron al capitán Benito Cerreño a navegar rumbo a Senegal. Pero al intentar proveerse de agua dulce en la isla Santa María debieron enfrentar un desafío que resolvieron con una estrategia de simulación extraordinaria. A criterio de historiadores y novelistas que se inspiraron en esos hechos históricos, entre ellos Herman Melville, Mattos, Pinto Rodríguez, Carmona y Greg Grandin, la acción de los esclavizados de la Tryal desnudó las contradicciones y ambigüedades de la esclavitud en la era de las revoluciones y las independencias americanas.
En este episodio contamos la historia de la sublevación rescatando la agencia de los esclavizados y de su “capitán” en la fragata, Mory. Además, conversamos con la historiadora Cristina Mazzeo, de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, con la actriz y socióloga Claudia Urbina, y con la historiadora Marisol Fila, de la Universidad Estatal de Míchigan, para conocer las condiciones de traslado durante las travesías esclavistas transatlánticas y reflexionar sobre la importancia historiográfica y política de recuperar las historias de los esclavizados.

Trailer de "Mory el capitán de los negros", segundo episodio del pódcast Microhistorias, que recupera la historia de uno de los protagonistas de la sublevación de esclavos en la Fragata Trial en el Pacífico Sur en el año 1804. Una historia fascinante que inspiró a novelistas e historiadores de la talla de Herman Melville y Greg Grandin, entre otros, para reflexionar sobre la esclavitud en América, el capitalismo extractivista, las disidencias políticas, las "ficciones verdaderas". Hasta ahora la literatura privilegió la perspectiva de los capitanes Benito Cerreño, español al mando de la fragata esclavista tomada por los esclavos, y Amasa Delano, estadounidense que recuperó a la Trial controlada por los sublevados. Pero en este episodio de Microhistorias recuperamos la experiencia de Mory, el capitán de los negros sublevados, y conversamos con las historiadoras Cristina Mazzeo y Marisol Fila para conocer las condiciones de traslado durante las travesías esclavistas transatlánticas y reflexionar sobre la importancia historiográfica y política de recuperar las historias de los esclavizados.

Fernando Guzmán (1778-1838) fue un destacado músico mulato esclavizado en el convento de Santo Domingo de la ciudad de Mendoza, donde algunos llegaron a catalogarlo como “el Johann Sebastian Bach de la América española”. En este episodio contamos su historia de vida y conversamos con William Guzmán, un descendiente de Fernando, quien narra su experiencia de descubrimiento de una afrodescendencia invisibilizada por varias generaciones. También participan los historiadores Luis Madrid y Christian Spencer, quienes explican el acceso de los esclavizados al oficio de músico, sus aportes a la música en Chile y Argentina, y la negación de esa influencia por las historiografías nacionalistas y la musicología tradicional.
