Microsoft Closes Mixer! Understanding The Fallout (VL250)

In a stunning turn of events, Microsoft has announced (through an interview given to The Verge) that it is shutting down Mixer effective over the course of the next month, and will be transitioning the streamers and viewers it has to Facebook Gaming starting immediately.
This marks a tremendous change in course for the multinational big tech giant, but why did it make the choice? And with no reference to cash changing hands, just what is Microsoft getting out of all of this anyway.
