Today we’re discussing the new sci-fi satire from famed “Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho, “Mickey 17” (2025). Based on the 2022 book, “Mickey7,” this film imagines a future where human printing and consciousness-uploading technology has created a class of worker known as “expendable” — someone who can die and be brought back to life endlessly. The expendable in our story, Mickey Barnes (played by Robert Pattinson), is a member of a space colonization mission headed by an absurd dictatorial figure (played by Mark Ruffalo) and his wife (Toni Collette), and subjected to a strange cult-like culture and endlessly deadly missions until a day of reckoning. Fascinating in its conception and with a cutting take on both oligarchs and western culture at large, “Mickey 17” is a memorable science fiction world on par with “Idiocracy” (2006). Directed by industry legend Steven Soderbergh, written by industry legend David Koepp, and starring industry legends Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, this story of married high-level British spies set at odds is brilliant, exciting, and visually beautiful. With an extraordinary ensemble cast (Gustaf Skarsgard, Tom Burke, Marisa Abela, and Naomie Harris) that includes an erstwhile James Bond 007, Pierce Brosnan, as well as “Bridgerton” heartthrob Rege-Jean Page, twists and turns and uncertainties abound around six intelligence employees. With precision and clarity, the film explores themes of marriage, loyalty (both national and personal), as well as toxic office politics. It’s enormous fun. Let’s get into it!

Directed by young Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, this multinational movie brought together animators from Latvia, Belgium, and France, was completed entirely in the free-to-use 3D modeling software Blender, and shipped only a few days before its premiere at Cannes Film Festival. The story follows an independent cat whose world is threatened by a massive flood, forcing him to find refuge on a boat populated by a capybara, lemur, secretary bird, and dog. Beautifully rendered and edge-of-your-seat thrilling, “Flow” is in fact the most widely distributed Latvian film in history. Currently streaming on MAX and with an inspiring story behind production, this is perhaps the most personal film of 2024. Let’s get into it!
