Michelle could see the writing on the wall. As her son, Alex went from 8th grade into high school and had more and more of a life outside of home, that she need to start preparing for her life outside of his.
She realized that besides work everything was about Alex. Her and her husband's lives were very much so revolved and his life and schedule.
She knew she did NOT want her son to feel guilty or any grief because Mom was grieving because he was moving towards graduating and leaving the house.
