We are HYPNOTISED, HAUNTED and HACK’D by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, whose unsettling Japanese thrillers are finally getting the Midnight Marathon treatment. We start with Kurosawa’s 1997 breakout CURE, a disorienting detective story with a stunning final shot and enough atmospheric scares to inspire the then-budding J-Horror movement. Then, as recently as last year, the director weaponised sinister internet communities to comment on societal sickness, in the darkly comic thriller CLOUD. Everybody needs an assistant Sano in their life.
