From the transcendent Winkies diner jumpscare in Mulholland Dr. to nightmares of Bob in Twin Peaks, our guy David Lynch was a true master of horror when he wanted to be. That’s what we’re obsessed with in this third and final leg of our Lynch marathon: honing in on terror, in the director’s final, bewildering feature Inland Empire, and some of his eeriest artworks.
Using (literally, gorily) raw materials and violent scenarios, Lynch’s mixed-media paintings show that his visual art can often be more strikingly obvious than his wonderful films - and, featuring Laura Dern in a career-best, multifaceted role, Inland Empire is certainly proof of that, too.
It’s our last lunch with Lynch for now, but not forever - see ya in our dreams and nightmares!!
