Key scripture: Daniel 1:1-7

Daniel takes place at an important moment in Israel’s history: the Exile. God’s people find themselves far from their homeland in a hostile environment. The Exile is a motif that is carried on in the New Testament to discuss the current reality of the church. The same pressures and questions faced by these Jews are faced by us, too. Yet, these pressures can be for our good—creating a faith and pattern of life that shine like lights into the darkest of places.

The church is meant to be a people who spend themselves for the good of others. Like seeds that die to bear fruit and light that shines for others to see, Jesus forms His people into a community whose everyday lives point beyond themselves to the goodness and grace of God.

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” is both a prayer for mercy and an invitation to examine our hearts. God’s forgiveness flows into us through Christ and, when truly received, begins to flow through us toward others.
