What does it actually take to stand firm when life gets hard? Not just to survive difficulty, but to move through it with genuine strength, purpose, and joy?
We continue our adventure into one of the most beloved passages in all of Scripture, Psalm 23, and in verse 5 we encounter an unexpected shift from the image of a shepherd leading sheep to the image of a generous host welcoming a guest to a lavishly prepared table. That shift is intentional and profound. The table God prepares is not a quick, forgettable meal. It is a feast of belonging, set before us even in the presence of our enemies, even when the world around us is hostile or indifferent. In the ancient Near East, sharing a meal carried enormous social and spiritual weight. To be welcomed to someone's table was to be affirmed, dignified, and claimed. And this is precisely what God does for us. He looks us in the eyes and says we belong, that we are deeply loved, that we can draw real and lasting strength from his presence. Jesus embodied this truth throughout his ministry, consistently choosing the table as the place where the kingdom of God broke through most visibly. For us today, the invitation stands. There is a source of inner strength available to us that no circumstance can permanently extinguish, and it is found in returning again and again to the presence of the One who has prepared a place for us.
