“We Have This Hope” Romans 5: 1-5, June 15, 2025 

We can rejoice in the midst of the suffering, in the midst of our suffering. Not because we are in denial. Rather it is because we know suffering cannot quash our hope. It cannot quash our joy. It cannot dim the promises of God that are given to us by our God who loves us more than we will ever know.

Today is Pentecost Sunday. In keeping with tradition, Historic Second Christian and Midway Christian churches gather together for worship. This year, we worshipped at Historic Second and the sermon was provided by Pastor Heather McColl of Midway Christian.

Often, we limit our celebration of Pentecost to one day. Yet Pentecost is a reminder, a celebration that the Holy Spirit is with us now and always. Part 6: Fifty Days of Easter, June 1, 2025 

At its core, our text for this morning is about identity and how that identity shapes our practices of faith. We need to remember that the early Church was not Christian; Jesus didn’t come to start a new religion. So many people within the early Church were Jewish. They were simply known as Christ followers but it wasn’t a new religion. They still practiced the Jewish religious traditions and saw themselves as Jewish. They simply accepted Jesus as the Messiah which was promised.

Part 5: Fifty Days of Easter, May 25, 2025 

This strange story of the Ethiopian eunuch could haveeasily laid out a rigid dogma of belief which the early church was supposed to follow. This story could have easily set the course for practice which would have shaped the Church for generations to come. Instead, it offers a glimpse into an encounter where the Holy Spirit is present. It offers us an invitation to share the faith through conversation and dialogue. In other words, instead of rigid dogma, this strange story reminds us that what is needed to share the Gospel message is compassion, openness, and a willingness to follow the Spirit where it leads.

In our text for this morning, having denied Christ three times, Peter is given a chance for reconciliation. But I would argue that the author of our text extends that chance to us as well. We are given an opportunity to embrace our call to listen and follow Jesus in this new reality and to show we love Jesus by feeding Jesus’ sheep, by tending his lambs.
