Midwestern State is entering “separation season” as it begins a four-game homestand on Thursday night with a renewal of the “Red River Rivalry” as the Cameron Aggies visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs hope to cement their standing as one the top-eight programs in the conference over the next couple of weeks. Angelo State took advantage of Zarria Carter’s foul trouble on Thursday night to defeat the Mustangs, 84-61. But some stern conversations on Friday led to an impressive performance at UT Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon. MSU earned its first road win of the season by knocking off the Falcons, 62-57, at UTPB Gym Complex. It was the Mustangs first victory over a top-eight team in the LSC and moved MSU to within a game of eighth place and only two games behind the three 7-4 teams that are sitting behind the top-four teams in the conference. The Stang Gang tips off against the Aggies at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State split a pair of road games as it went from the Concho Valley to the Permian Basin over the weekend. A poor performance on the glass and at the free-throw line cost the Mustangs at Angelo State as the Rams won the first game of the road trip, 72-68. Pierre Sanders refused to let the Stang Gang stumble at UT Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon. Sanders poured in 32 points and was the heartbeat of the team as it rallied from a 20-point deficit in the first half to defeat the Falcons in overtime, 80-74. The Mustangs did not allow UTPB to score a single point in the overtime period. Will Shepherd hit a 3-pointer with 3:06 remaining in overtime, and MSU held on for the victory. Midwestern State opens a four-game homestand on Thursday as it renews the “Red River Rivalry” with the Cameron Aggies. Tipoff is at 7:30 pm. The homestand continues on Saturday afternoon with Oklahoma Christian visiting D.L. Ligon Coliseum at 3 p.m.

Midwestern State has won six of its last seven games after two decisive victories over Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State. This week, the Mustangs visit Angelo State and UT Permian Basin. Bakari LaStrap played his sixth game of the season in the 88-62 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday and led the Mustangs with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The senior from Houston also had two steals in the victory as he played a season-high 21 minutes. Reggie Hill started the two games this past week and posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the 82-53 triumph over WNMU. He also had eight rebounds against the Lobos. This week, the Mustangs have a stern test on the road as they enter the action with an 11-3 overall record and a 6-2 record in the hotly contested Lone Star Conference.

Midwestern State steamrolled their way past Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum this past week. Zarria Carter scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in an 82-44 win over WNMU and followed that up with a 37-point, 16-rebound effort in an 80-60 triumph over the Lobos on Saturday. Carter was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week after shooting 82.8 percent (24-of-29) in the two games combined. Carter leads the LSC and ranks eighth in NCAA Division II, scoring 20.9 points per game, and she is grabbing 11.8 rebounds per game, which leads the league and is fifth-most nationally. This week, the Stang Gang is on the road to face the red-hot Rambelles of Angelo State, who have a 10-game winning streak, and then its on to Odessa for a showdown with UT Permian Basin, which is 7-2 in conference play and owns a 6-2 record at home.

Midwestern State is 4-2 to start the Lone Star Conference campaign and is No. 5 in the most recent D2CSC South Central Region rankings with a 9-3 record overall. The Mustangs saw a four-game winning streak snapped with an 83-81 loss at Eastern New Mexico, but less than 48 hours earlier MSU celebrated a sensational 70-69 triumph at West Texas A&M. Midwestern State had not won in Canyon since a 74-65 victory in the 2015-16 season. Bakari LaStrap scored 29 points on the road trip, including a team-high 21 points at ENMU as he hit 5-of-8 shots from the field. Vojin Mastilovic played a season-high 22 minutes against the Greyhounds and helped the Mustangs get back in the game after they fell behind, 16-0, in the opening four minutes. This week, the Mustangs are back at D.L. Ligon Coliseum to host both Western New Mexico and Lone Star Conference newcomer — Sul Ross State. Tipoff against WNMU is slated for Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., and the Lobos will make their first-ever appearance at Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Gabriel Gacovicaj scored twice, and Mere Escobar finished with a goal and an assist in the resounding victory for the Mustangs, who improved to 1-1-1 in the all-time series with all three meetings coming in the postseason and at Stang Park. MSU wants to “Pack the Park” again this Sunday as Fort Lewis visits the Mustangs for a rematch of last year’s NCAA Tournament meeting, when the Skyhawks stymied Escobar but fell to MSU, 2-1, in the second round at Stang Park. Fort Lewis defeated UC Colorado Springs, 4-2, on Sunday to advance to the third round this season.
